• Dortmund determined to build on winning start, says Sahin

  Borussia Dortmund are keen to overcome any teething pains by capitalising on their 2-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in their Bundesliga opener on Saturday.

  Dortmund faced a tough battle to find their rhythm against Frankfurt in a cagey match that was nearing a scoreless draw until substitute Jamie Gittens' introduction.

  The 20-year-old broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, moments after Frankfurt's Fares Chaibi had missed a big chance.

  The visitors came close to equalising late on, but Gittens scored his second goal after a quick counter-attack, earning coach Nuri Sahin his first three points in charge.

  "We had moments where we struggled, the momentum was on their side, especially after they almost made it 1-0. But we scored and that's what matters," Sahin told reporters after the game.

  "We had the rub of the green and the momentum was luckily on our side towards the end. We made a relatively difficult start to the game – new season, new coach, new players.

  "It was important to start off with three points. I am relieved. [Now] we need to accelerate this process with victories."

  Dortmund also became the first team in Bundesliga history to win their league opener in 10 consecutive seasons.

  Sahin was particularly proud of Gitten's performance, as the youngster put in a clinical performance, scoring with both of his shots after coming off the bench.

  "All five [substitutes] came in with extra fire. The scenes are the best testament to Jamie's development. Without any detours, he's on his way up. We have high expectations for him."

  Luis Suarez scored the fastest goal in Inter Miami's history as his brace secured a 2-0 win over FC Cincinnati on Saturday.

  Though their task was made slightly harder by Tomas Aviles' first-half red card, the hosts cruised to a comfortable victory despite Lionel Messi's continued absence.

  It took just 31 seconds for Suarez to get Miami up and running, meeting Marcelo Weigandt's cross with a first-time volley to send it into the bottom-left corner.

  And he had his second just five minutes later after a wonderful link-up with Matias Rojas set him up to fire in at the near post.

  Aviles received his first booking 11 minutes in and was punished for a needless, clumsy challenge after 42 minutes, resulting in him receiving his marching orders.

  Cincinnati tried to use their man advantage to push for a goal in the second half, with Yuya Kubo having the best chance only to be thwarted by David Martinez's block.

  By holding out for the win, Miami clinched the team's MLS Cup playoff berth with eight games remaining.

  Miami came back from the Leagues Cup break in fine form, and now have security after becoming the third-fastest team in MLS history to secure a playoff place.

  And it is all down to Suarez's lightning-quick start. As well as scoring the fastest goal in the club's history, he has also netted the most goals in a single season for the Herons (18), overtaking Gonzalo Higuain's tally of 16 in 2022. 

• Lyon's owner denies setting €100million target for transfers

  Lyon are not required to sell players for €100million before the summer transfer window ends, the French club's owner John Textor said.

  The club have endured a tough start to the season so far, failing to win either of their games without scoring a goal.

  Their first home game of the season saw them lose 2-0 to Monaco, with Lyon only attempting one shot in that game, their lowest tally in a single Ligue 1 game since Opta began to collect this data (2006-07).

  In their first match against Rennes, a 3-0 defeat, they registered 16 attempts, though only managed two on target compared to their opponents' eight. 

  On Thursday, the French newspaper L'Equipe reported that Lyon had put the majority of their squad on the transfer market to raise €75m to balance their budget and meet financial sales targets, having spent around €134m since June, more than any other team in France. 

  "We do not have sales targets, and we are not required to sell €100million of players as there may be other ways to bring in revenues to maintain financial sustainability," Textor told Reuters.

  Textor is the majority stakeholder of Lyon through Eagle Football Group, a holding company listed in Paris. The French side was acquired by Eagle Football in 2022, which holds 87.7% of the share capital.

  The group posted a yearly revenue of €368.3m in June, an increase of 78% from the previous year, helped by events and an uptick in player trading.

  Textor also said that they expect to sell maybe two more players before the transfer window closes on Friday, acknowledging that it has been a slow window in that regard and that Lyon may have missed their normal budget in the off-season.

  "That's certainly true, but that does not mean that we are required to hit that budget. If it's a slow transfer window, then we hold players until the next window. It's as simple as that," he added.

  The American businessman, who partly owns Botafogo in Brazil, RVD Molenbeek in Belgium and Crystal Palace in England, indicated that there is always "flexibility in how to create cash flows".

  "Every company in France has the same challenge. At the end of the year, negative equity has to be restored. It’s no different in football," he said.
