New Barbados Netball Association (BNA) President Dr Carmeta Douglin has announced the establishment of a new coaching structure for the national senior team as they get ready for the Netball World Cup in South Africa this summer.

Dr Douglin told the SportsMax Zone Thursday that the BNA is taking applications for an international coaching director who will work with a three-member local coaching staff.

“That person will come and work with our coaches to really help our netball. It’s a whole team, it’s not just a coach and an assistant coach so we are putting a lot of effort in and we do expect to get some results coming out of that,” Dr Douglin said.

The local three-member panel will comprise a shooting coach, mid-court coach and defensive coach, with one of them to be appointed the head coach. That three-member panel is expected to be confirmed by mid-January and the international coaching director should be chosen by month-end.

“So we will have three local coaches supported by the international coaching director, four persons in our coaching arena and they will be working closely together to develop plans going forward,” said Dr Douglin, who was elected new BNA president early last month after topping unseated President Nisha Craigwell 24-19 at the BNA’s annual general meeting.

Barbados qualified for the 2023 Netball World Cup as No.2 behind winners Trinidad and Tobago at the Americas Netball World Cup qualifying series last October in Kingston, Jamaica.

Currently ranked 14th in the world, Barbados are joining automatic qualifiers Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago as the three Caribbean countries set to compete at the July 28 to August 8 Netball World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa.

Barbados will contest Pool B in Cape Town alongside World No.3 England, Malawi and Scotland. Reigning champions, World No.1 and 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallists Australia are in Pool A with Tonga, Zimbabwe and Fiji, while Pool C has World fourth-ranked Jamaica, South Africa, Wales and Sri Lanka, and Pool D is headed by five-time world champions and World No.2 New Zealand, Uganda, Trinidad and Tobago and Singapore.

Netball Jamaica has received a major financial boost towards its preparations for the 2023 Netball World Cup scheduled for July 28-August 6 in Cape Town.

The association, on Tuesday, received a $10 million sponsorship from National Baking Company and are looking to raise $51 million to cover its expenses in the build-up to the marquee event.

“It is a big day for us at Netball Jamaica. We are grateful to National for coming on board,” said President Tricia Robinson.

Their final preparation before the World Cup will come in a three-match series against England which will take place from January 11th- January 15th.

“We are really looking forward to this tour. It will give the coaching staff an opportunity to see exactly where we are in terms of preparation for the World Cup,” Robinson said.

The first match, on the 11th January, will take place at Manchester’s AO Arena, before the teams travel down south to the Copper Box Arena in London for back-to-back games on the 14th and 15th January.

The Barbados Cricket Board will host a tri-series tournament to decide their West Indies Championship squad in January.

Shai Hope, Shane Dowrich and Nicholas Kirton will captain the different sides which are named after Sir Charles Griffith, Sir Garfield Sobers and Sir Wes Hall.

The first match is from January 5-7, second is from January 10-12 and the third match is from 15-17. After those three, the Pride squad will play the best remaining players from the series in a four-day practice match from January 21-24.

Former Reggae Boyz striker Dever Orgill has signed for Turkish team Bodrumspor.

Orgill spent last season at Manisa FK, also in Turkey, scoring three goals in 10 matches in a season where he was plagued with injury.

“We signed a contract with Dever Orgill, the Jamaican footballer who wore Manisa FK jersey last season. We wish him success in the Bodrumspor uniform,” the team said on its Facebook page.

Bodrumspor finished third in the TTF Second League last season.

Orgill scored four goals in 18 appearances for the Reggae Boyz between 2010 and 2019.

Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz have been confirmed as participants in the 2023 FFA Cup of Nations in Australia from February 13-25.

The 44th ranked Girlz will battle Spain, Czech Republic and the hosts in the four-team tournament.

The teams will play a round-robin tournament where the winner will be determined by who finishes with the most points after their three games.

The event was last held in 2019 with Australia coming out on top ahead of South Korea, New Zealand and Argentina.

Former Test opening batsman Philo Wallace doesn’t believe that Shivnarine Chanderpaul should become the new head coach of the West Indies cricket team.

Speaking on the Mason And Guest cricket radio show on Tuesday night, Wallace said that Chanderpaul was lacking coaching experience at the international level and was not the man for the job.

“Shiv Chanderpaul as head coach would surprise me. If he is appointed, is it based on scoring 11,000 Test runs, his coaching experience at the international level is very limited. We cannot continue to keep following people. We have to set the example. Chanderpaul has been a fantastic player. He has had some success with the Jamaican Tallawahs, is it possible he can transfer that into red ball cricket?”

“Is there a bigger role outside of head coach for Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Can he be our batting consultant? Is he better suited for that role rather than a being head coach. These are things that need to be discussed. Just don’t appoint a man because he has over 11 000 Test runs,” Wallace said.

Wallace, 52, a former Barbados captain, said that selecting a head coach of the West Indies is going to be a major headache.

“We need to get someone to get our young people to understand what Test cricket is all about. Is Chanderpaul capable of doing that?

“I know he has matured now, he is a better person but is he not better suited to be the batting consultant. The head coach of Cricket West Indies is going to be a headache. If you have not appointed one for the new year for the serious tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa, you are staring down the barrel in relation to applications for the head coach job,” he added.

The 48-year-old Chanderpaul is one of the most prolific bastmen in the history of West Indies’ cricket, scoring 11,867 runs with 30 hundreds. He played the last of his 164 matches against England at Kensington Oval in May 2015.

Rising junior track athlete Jenna-Marie Thomas charts off to Geneva, Ohio, United States on Wednesday on a full athletic scholarship at SPIRE Institute and Academy.

Thomas, 14, currently holds four NGC/NAAATT National Junior Championship titles having swept the girls’ U-15 60-metre hurdles, 200m, 300m hurdles and 400m events at the annual meet in July. There, she also earned U-17 shot put silver.

The IG Fastlane Athletics Club sprinter/hurdler will continue her high school studies at SPIRE in grade ten and will focus on developing in the 200 and 400m sprints, as well as 100m and 400m hurdles.

Thomas was pleased to secure the scholarship at such a young age and is intent on making the most of her budding athletic career. She leaves Holy Faith Convent, Couva to head to Ohio.

“I attained this scholarship by displaying great potential on the track, and academically, which provided the opportunity for me to qualify and receive a full athletic scholarship.

“Getting a scholarship at this age was unexpected; however, receiving one would have been part of my goals as an athlete. Some of my main goals and aspirations I would like to achieve while there are improving and excel in both sprint and hurdle events,” she said.

Locally, she’s been coached by IG Fastlane’s Samuel Roach for the past seven years. Her hurdles coaches are Nataki Dasant, Heathcliffe Thorne, Aiesha Colthrust and Kern Alexis.

Thomas also earned girls’ U-17 4x100m relay bronze at the Carifta Games in Jamaica earlier this year. She was fifth in the 400m final.

Thomas also finished fourth in the women’s 400m event at the 2022 National Open Championships, clocking 57.89 seconds.

Despite her experience on the track, Thomas said she was still a bit nervy to start school in the US. However, the speedster wants to embrace the opportunity and face the challenges head on, in pursuit of a successful athletic career.

“I am bit anxious but mostly excited to study because of the new experiences. I think balancing school and sport would be quite similar to what I normally do just balancing a new environment would be a bit challenging in view of the fact that the climate is different to my home country.

“I plan on approaching everything with a positive attitude in that way it will be one step closer to achieving my goals,” she added.

Her personal bests are; 60m hurdles (9.53s), 100m (12.82s), 200m (25.90s), 100m hurdles (15.31s), 300m hurdles (44.89s), 400m (57.89s), 400m hurdles (1.05s), high jump (1.53m) and shot put (10.06m).

Looking ahead, Thomas said she would like to spend most of her time working on the 400m hurdles.

The Cricket West Indies Selection Panel on Thursday named the 16-member West Indies Women’s squad to play in a T20 International (T20I) Tri-Series against South Africa and India in East London from 19 to 30 January 2023 as part of their final preparations for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in February.

The West Indies Women will play at least four matches, playing two matches each against hosts South Africa and India. The two leading teams will then play each other in the Tri-Series Final at Buffalo Park on 2 February.  West Indies will also play a warm-up match against South Africa ahead of the Tri-Series at Beacon Bay on 16 January.

Lead Selector Ann Browne-John said: “The selection panel has named a squad that we believe has the talent and experience to compete against India and South Africa. The squad sees the return of Stafanie Taylor who missed the recent series against England due to injury and Britney Cooper, the middle order batter who last played against South Africa Women in September 2021.

Browne-John added: “Our batting in the most recent series was less than par against a very good England bowling attack. We believe that with the return of some experienced batters, they will the able to support captain Hayley Matthews at the top of the order. Shamilia Connell and Shakera Selman also return after injury and will fortify the pace attack with Chinelle Henry, Cherry Ann Fraser and Aaliyah Alleyne. The team had commendable performances in South Africa in early 2022 and we know that the entire team will be drawing on that experience as they take on the home team and India in this Tri-Series and then potentially again at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup also in South Africa.”

All matches in the Tri-Series will be played at the Buffalo Park in East London.

Final squads for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa must be submitted by 2 February. The eighth edition of the marquee ICC Women’s Event will begin on 10 February with hosts South Africa taking on Sri Lanka. West Indies have been drawn in Group 2 alongside England, India, Pakistan and Ireland.

Newlands, Cape Town, Boland Park, Paarl and St. George’s Park, Gqeberha are the host venues for the tournament with both Semi-Finals and Final being played in Cape Town. The Final at Newlands will be held on 26 February.

Several charges have been laid against Waterhouse’s promising midfielder, Devonte Walker who is accused of stealing a teammate’s cheque and forcing him to make false reports to the club’s administration.

Walker, 19, is also accused of calling the complainant to a location in Kingston 11, where he held him at gunpoint and forced him to report to the club that the money had been returned.

He also allegedly threatened him not to return to training.

The teenager has been charged with assault at common-law, being in possession of a prohibited weapon, using a prohibited weapon to commit a felony and conspiracy.

Reports from the Olympic Gardens Police are that on December 8, another player at the football club received his monthly wages via cheque.

The player reportedly placed the cheque in his pocket and left his belongings in the players’ changing area.

Upon his return, the cheque could not be found.

After receiving the report, the police followed several lines of enquiry, and Walker emerged as a suspect.

During investigations that followed, CCTV footage showed a man believed to be Walker cashing the missing cheque at a wholesale.

Upon the conclusion of their investigations, detectives arrested Walker and subsequently charged him on December 27.

His court date is being arranged.

Over 600 children in Waterhouse and Ewarton were treated to food, gifts and fun by World Championship and Olympic gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce at the 15th staging of her annual Christmas Treat on Monday.

Meals such as hot dogs, popcorn, snow cones, rice and peas with fried chicken and macaroni and cheese with salad, chicken soup as well as unlimited juices and water were provided.

GraceKennedy provided an activity zone with Santa giving snacks from his sack throughout the day while Digicel provided five different bouncy houses and an inflatable obstacle course.

Children also received a SFP Pocket Rocket Foundation gift bag containing age-appropriate toys along with a GraceKennedy snack bag. Older children received branded NIKE drawstring bags.

“Once again, I thank my Sponsors this year NIKE, GraceKennedy, Digicel, Excelsior, Rubis, Toyota Jamaica, Scoops Unlimited and Sagicor in making both the Ewarton and Waterhouse Christmas Treat a tremendous success,” Fraser-Pryce said.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) on Saturday announced a new innovation for the long format of the game, with the addition of a triangular red-ball tournament to start at the end of the West Indies Championship in April, 2023.  The new Headley Weekes Series will feature three matches and three teams. Team Headley and Team Weekes will be selected from the best performers in the 2023 West Indies Championship and players outside the starting West Indies Test XI. The new West Indies Academy will provide the third team in the new Series.

Team Headley and Team Weekes are named in honour of West Indies pioneers and legendary batting greats George Headley and Sir Everton Weekes, whose names are also honoured on the Trophy for the winners of the West Indies Championship. The matches will be played from 18 April to 6 May at Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG) in Antigua.

Before that, the 2023 edition of West Indies Championship will be played across five rounds of four-day, red ball cricket featuring the six regional Franchise teams – defending champions Barbados Pride, Guyana Harpy Eagles, Jamaica Scorpions, Leeward Islands Hurricanes, Trinidad and Tobago Red Force, and Windward Islands Volcanoes.

The 2023 West Indies Championship commences in February. The first two rounds will be played from 1 February to 11 February in Grenada at the National Stadium and in Antigua at the CCG and the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium (SVRS). There will then be a break and the tournament will resume on 15 March and run until 1 April for the final three rounds, after which the champions will be crowned and presented with the Headley Weekes Trophy. These matches will be played in Trinidad at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy (BLCA), Queens Park Oval (QPO) and the Diego Martin Sports Complex (DMSC).

Johnny Grave, CEO of CWI said: “We are delighted to unveil the Headley Weekes Series, which is a new idea that will extend the four-day season, create more opportunities for our players to showcase their skills and will be a huge incentive for them to strive towards selection into our ‘A’ Team, and ultimately our Test Team.  It will also provide some strong competitive red-ball cricket for our new West Indies Academy Players as we continue to try to ensure that the next generation of players are being prepared along the pathway to international cricket.  Whilst the West Indies Championship is once again going to be played on a ‘one’ round, five-match basis, with the plans we have for our ‘A’ Team and Academy to go on overseas tours after the Headley Weekes Series we expect our best players in the region will still play at least ten four-day games in the first half of next year.”
