The Dominican Republic followed up their win against Korea yesterday with a victory against Poland at the Volleyball Nation’s League in Italy.
The Queens of the Caribbean came from a set down to triumph 22-25, 25-22, 28-26,25-21 and get their third win of the competition.
Poland was aggressive in the opening set and that seemed to have Dom Rep by surprise. However, they adjusted and despite trailing early in the second set, recovered to pull even by winning the second set.
All throughout the tournament, the Dominican Republic’s net and backcourt defence has been solid and it was the highlight of the third set. Thanks to some outstanding by Libero Brenda Castillo, who had 26 digs in the match, Dom Rep was able to keep the scores close and take the set down to the wire.
Bethania De La Cruz and Brayelin Elizabeth Martinez held their nerves and produced some crucial plays at the end to push the Dominican Republic over the line to lead the game two sets to one.
In the fourth set, Poland tried desperately to mount a fightback but the Dominican Republic were consistent with their defence and smart with their attacks and managed to stymie their efforts. Poland’s players pressing to climb back into the match committed several errors that their opponents took advantage of as they the closed out a hard-fought victory.
De La Cruz and Poland’s Stysiak Madalena were the game’s top scorers with 26 points each. Madalena finished with 21 kills, four blocks and an ace while De La Cruz finished with 21 kills, two blocks and three aces.
With this win, the Dominican Republic now climbs to seventh in the standings with 10 points from six matches. Their next game of the preliminary round will be against Russia on June 6.

Paulino produces spirited anchor leg to help Dominican Republic book spot in Mixed 4x400m final at World Athletics Relays
Reigning World 400m champion Marileidy Paulino produced a special anchor leg to help the Dominican Republic book their spot in the final of the Mixed 4x400m relay on day one of the World Athletics Relays at the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium in Nassau on Saturday.
Paulino got the baton down the field and produced a 48.93 split on her anchor leg to move her country up to second (3:14.39) and secure a spot in Saturday’s final alongside the Netherlands who won the heat in 3:12.16.
Both teams also secured their spots in the field at the Olympics in Paris later this year.
Jamaica (Roshawn Clarke, Leah Anderson, Rusheen McDonald, Janieve Russell) ran 3:14.83 and hosts the Bahamas (Alonzo Russell, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Steven Gardiner, Shania Adderley) ran 3:14.86 but failed to advance to the final after finishing third and fourth, respectively.
Both teams will get another opportunity to make it to Paris in the second round of Olympic qualifying on Sunday.
USA (3:11.52), Ireland (3:12.50), Belgium (3:13.18) Poland (3:13.53), Nigeria (3:13.79) and France (3:14.71) make up the eight teams to advance to the final.
Tonali set for August return after receiving suspended two-month ban from FA
Sandro Tonali has been given a suspended two-month ban by the Football Association (FA) after admitting to breaching gambling rules.
The sanction means the Newcastle United midfielder will be eligible to return to action on August 27, 2024, when his 10-month suspension issued by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) expires.
FIFA ratified that ban, causing it to become applicable worldwide, after Tonali admitted to placing bets on matches as part of an investigation into unregulated betting platforms in Italy.
In March, the FA charged Tonali with breaching English football's gambling rules 50 times between August and October last year, leading to fears his spell out of the game could be extended.
However, on Thursday it was confirmed that the FA had suspended Tonali's punishment for the duration of the 2024-25 season, meaning he can return in August if he does not reoffend.
In a statement, Newcastle said: "Sandro Tonali has been given a suspended two-month ban from competitive football by an independent regulatory commission after self-declaring breaches of FA betting rules.
"He has also been fined £20,000 and warned by the FA as to his future conduct.
"Provided that he does not commit any further breach of the FA betting rules during the suspension period, Sandro will not serve any part of the two-month sanction.
"As acknowledged by the FA in the independent regulatory commission's written reasons, the level of assistance Sandro has provided by self-referring and fully cooperating with a subsequent investigation is extraordinary and unprecedented.
"Sandro is continuing to follow a therapeutic plan and educational programme with the club's full support and will continue to train with his team-mates."
Tonali's initial ban has limited him to just eight Premier League appearances since he joined Newcastle from Milan in a £55million deal, while he will also miss Italy's Euro 2024 campaign.
