Mikel Arteta is unsure on the severity of the injuries sustained by Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber as Arsenal twice surrendered the lead in a 2-2 draw with title rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

Bukayo Saka and Mikel Merino were on target for the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium but Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah both equalised to ensure Arne Slot's men would leave with a point.

There was a noticeable shift in momentum when Arsenal, already without the suspended William Saliba, lost Gabriel and Timber to injuries after the break.

Asked by Sky Sports for an update after the game, Arteta said: " Well I don't know exactly what happened (with Timber) but he said he cannot carry on and big Gabi as well, so I don't know."

Prompted on Gabriel specifically, he said: "I don't know."

Arteta felt his side were the better side even accounting for the injuries, adding: "Even with the changes I thought we were the better team, we deserved to win the game.

"But obviously we didn't so there are learnings to take from that especially when we concede both goals, the second one the transition moment, we ended up in the final third then 10 seconds later we are two-on-one in our box at this level against this team, obviously you cannot give this away."

Saka acknowledged that losing Gabriel was a momentum shifter in the game but said the incident cannot be used as an excuse by the Gunners, who are now five points off leaders Manchester City in third place.

"Yeah of course he's a big player for us, that's not an excuse we have to adapt and do our best whoever's on the pitch," he said.

"It's (the mood in the dressing room) a bit disappointed, credit to Liverpool they're a good team but we just felt like we didn't show our best selves for the full 90 minutes."

Saka had also missed the past two matches with injury and he was chomping at the bit to be involved.

"I hate missing games, it was really frustrating to be on the side watching, I just had this game on my mind. I was happy to be back out there today."

“Rodri should win the Ballon d’Or” after his “incredible” season with Manchester City, believes Ruben Dias ahead of Monday’s award ceremony.

Rodri helped Pep Guardiola’s side to a record fourth consecutive Premier League title last campaign, while also lifting the European Championship with Spain.

The Spaniard has, however, been ruled out for the remainder of the season after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury against Arsenal back in September.

Of the 50 matches Rodri played in all competitions for City last term, Guardiola's side won 38 and only lost once, but they lost four of the nine games he missed.

Though his influence within Guardiola's ranks has not been missed, with City currently top of the Premier League, Dias still backed his team-mate to win football's most prestigious individual accolade.

“Rodri should win the Ballon d’Or! He had an impressive season," Dias said.

“Not one… many in a row. He won the Euros, which is not found in every generation. Without a doubt, a special player."

Rodri, however, comes up against Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, who is favourite to win the Ballon d’Or and aiming to become the first Brazilian since Kaka in 2007 to claim the award.

Vinicius starred for Los Blancos last term, notching 35 goal involvements (24 goals, 11 assists) in all competitions, helping Carlo Ancelotti’s side to a LaLiga and Champions League double.

His team-mate Jude Bellingham is also in the running after a stellar campaign in his debut year in Madrid.

Lautaro Martinez, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland are also among the contenders. 

Mohamed Salah proved the saviour for Liverpool as they twice fought back to earn a 2-2 draw against Arsenal in a pulsating clash between two Premier League title rivals at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners had struck first after nine minutes on home turf on Sunday when Bukayo Saka took down Ben White's excellent long ball in the area, turned Andrew Robertson, and rifled past Caoimhín Kelleher at his near post.

Saka consequently became the youngest Arsenal player to reach 50 Premier League goals but Liverpool restored parity when Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner was flicked on by Luis Diaz at the near post and nodded home by Virgil van Dijk.

Mikel Merino missed a great chance from one Declan Rice set-piece but restored Arsenal's lead from the England international's wicked free-kick shortly before half-time.

Arsenal lost Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber to injury in the second half and the loss of the defensive duo saw them noticeably penned further in their own half.

The pressure eventually told when Alexander-Arnold played a superb long ball forward that Darwin Nunez controlled and he had the wherewithal to tee up Salah to coolly slot home the equaliser nine minutes from time.

Arne Slot's men are consequently second in the table, just a point behind leaders Manchester City, while Mikel Arteta's Gunners are five off top spot in third.

Saka was awarded the Man of the Match for an industrious display and his excellent opener saw him become the youngest Arsenal player to 50 Premier League goals, beating Thierry Henry and also seeing him become the seventh youngest player to a half century of goals in the Premier League.

Liverpool were rewarded for a much-improved second-half performance, though, and Arne Slot is now the first Liverpool manager to not lose any of this first seven away matches in charge since William Connell in February 1923.

Van Dijk grabbed the first equaliser and he now has 17 headed goals in the Premier League, a tally bettered only by John Terry among defenders (27). Indeed, 15 of his last 18 Premier League goals have come via his head.

Merino's first Gunners goal also came via his head and it marked Arsenal's 27th goal from set-pieces (excluding penalties) since the start of last season, the most in the competition.

Bayern Munich were rewarded for not underestimating bottom club VfL Bochum with a 5-0 win according to coach Vincent Kompany.

The Bavarians bounced back from their midweek Champions League loss at Barcelona as they delivered a five-star victory through five different scorers.

It means Bayern have now scored 29 league goals this season, the joint-highest tally after eight games of a Bundesliga campaign. Only they themselves have scored as many goals at this stage of a top-flight campaign, also doing so in 2021-22 and 1976-77.

Kompany ensured his side were in no mood for adventures against Bochum and despite an early chance for the hosts, they dominated the game.

"We played very seriously in this game. We lost here twice in the past three years, so there was no underestimating of the opponent," Kompany told a press conference.

"We conceded a big chance early in the first half, but I liked the fact that we stayed calm."

Bochum's Moritz Broschinski missed that opportunity, seeing his eighth-minute effort cleared on the line, before Bayern scored twice in the first half and another three times after the break.

Bayern are on 20 points, ahead of second-placed RB Leipzig on goal difference. Champions Bayer Leverkusen are in third place on 15. Bochum remain in last place with one point from eight games.

The win also meant Kompany, who had been criticised for Champions League defeats to Aston Villa and Barcelona, became the first coach in Bundesliga history whose team has netted 29 times in his first eight league games in charge.

The Belgian, who succeeded Thomas Tuchel, is in his first season in Munich.

"We stayed calm and serious from the first to the last minute," Kompany said. "The team did a good job. We just want to continue like this.

"We are very happy for what it (victory) does for us in the Bundesliga," he added.

Oliver Glasner asserted that Crystal Palace’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham represented “the benchmark” for his side going forward.

Palace secured their first three points of the season after a torrid run of eight games without a win at the start of the campaign.

Jean-Philippe Mateta secured the winner in the 31st minute and Palace could have had more with Eberechi Eze seeing a goal ruled out for offside and being denied a potential penalty shout in the second-half.

While the pressure had been mounting on Glasner after a run of three straight defeats, victory could ease the scrutiny.

"It helps all of us if we play in that way. We are a very good team and it's very difficult to beat us. Getting this response, this game helps us,” Glasner told BBC Sport.

We have to show it again in three days against Villa. This is the benchmark. You can score and concede, this is football.”

Palace managed 14 shots throughout the game, with six of those on target. It was more than their traditionally attacking opponents could muster as they put just three shots on target and caused few problems for the hosts.

While Glasner’s side were unable to capitalise further on their dominance, he was delighted with the performance.

"Congratulations to team, to the players for how they played today with passion and courage. They showed it on the pitch against a good Tottenham team,” he added.

"The players took it as a chance and every single phase we played great and moved the ball. A very good performance today.

"I mentioned before the game that if we were convinced changing the formation was the solution then we would do it immediately. Tottenham tried everything late on. The players did it amazing and that is why we won this game."

Eberechi Eze looked back to his best, as he notched the second-highest expected goals (xG) total on his team (0.16), only beaten by goalscorer Mateta (0.24).

He contributed the assist with a skilful flick to direct Daniel Munoz’s cross into the path of Mateta. He also took the most shots (four) and had the most touches in the box (seven) of both sides.

"I think we see the old Eze all season. He's been a bit unlucky. We know he is technically unbelievable,” Glasner said.

“He scored a great goal but was offside. I think it's a penalty but I didn't see it on TV. If he has a free shot then he shoots so I don't know why he would lie down on the grass.”

Celtic returned to the top of the Scottish Premiership table with a routine 3-0 victory at Motherwell, putting them back above Aberdeen on goal difference.

Brendan Rodgers' Bhoys had been knocked off the summit by the Dons' 1-0 win over Dundee United on Saturday, but they responded by easing to their eighth victory in nine games at Fir Park.

Luke McCowan steered in the opener on his first Celtic start, after Lennon Miller had twice struck the woodwork in the early stages.

Stand-in captain Alistair Johnston then ghosted in to score their second at the back post shortly before the hour mark, with Adam Idah adding a third before Motherwall's Liam Gordon was sent off in stoppage time.

That result piled the pressure on Rangers, who could have ended the weekend nine points adrift of the top two, but they claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over St Mirren at Ibrox to stay within six.

Mohamed Diomande's powerful close-range finish put the Gers ahead, but Alex Gogic rose to nod in a St Mirren equaliser midway through the first half.

Vaclav Cerny spared their blushes, though, as he scored the winner following good work from Cyriel Dessers in the 69th minute. 

Rangers go to second-placed Aberdeen, who are yet to lose this season, for a huge fixture in the title race on Wednesday.

In Sunday's other Premiership game, teenager James Wilson struck three minutes from time to rescue a point for Hearts in a 1-1 Edinburgh Derby draw at Hibernian.

Mykola Kuharevich had put Hibs ahead on the rebound after Marvin Ekpiteta headed against the crossbar just after the hour mark, but Wilson got the final touch to divert James Penrice's long throw home with stoppage time looming.

The result keeps Hibs rooted to the foot of the table with six points, though they are only behind 11th-placed Hearts on goal difference and still have a game in hand to come.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was left fuming after his side conceded a contentious late penalty to lose 2-1 to West Ham United at the London Stadium on Sunday. 

The Red Devils wasted several clear chances in the first half of the Premier League contest with Alejandro Garnacho rattling the crossbar and Diogo Dalot firing over with the goal gaping in front of him.

Those first-half misses came back to haunt them as Crysencio Summerville found the breakthrough for West Ham in the 76th minute before Casemiro netted a late equaliser for Ten Hag’s side. 

But a controversial penalty, awarded for a foul on Danny Ings by Matthijs de Ligt, ensured West Ham secured the three points as Jarrod Bowen slotted past Andre Onana in the 92nd minute from 12 yards and piled more pressure on the United boss.

“We have felt injustice three times this season. We have to score. We created so many chances. We should've been two or three goals up. In the second half, we were forcing it, but we allowed them into the game,” Ten Hag told BBC Sport. 

“When you are losing 1-0, you need the big personality and character of the team and we showed resilience to get back into it. But it was unfair and unjust, the way we conceded the penalty."

Referee David Coote awarded the penalty against United in the 87th minute after looking at the pitchside monitor despite protestations from the visiting players that Ings had handled the ball before the challenge from De Ligt. 

Enzo Maresca said Cole Palmer's display against Newcastle United is the reason "fans pay to watch" after the Blues talisman led them back into the Premier League top four. 

Palmer struck the winner 75 seconds into the second half after Nicolas Jackson saw his goal cancelled out by Alexander Isak. 

The England international played a huge role in the opener too, producing a sweeping long-range pass into the path of Pedro Neto, who squared for Jackson to finish. 

Palmer has now registered a division-high 12 goal involvements this season (seven goals, five assists), overtaking Erling Haaland (11) on Sunday. 

"It is the reason why people pay, they want to see that kind of player. We are very happy to have him," Maresca said. 

Chelsea have now won 10 of their 14 Premier League games since the beginning of May (D2 L2), with only Manchester City (35) winning more points in the competition in this period.

However, the Blues had to overcome some nervy moments at Stamford Bridge, with Isak twice going close in the second half but unable to test Robert Sanchez. 

Chelsea will welcome the Magpies back to the capital in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, and Maresca wants to see an improvement from his players. 

"I am always concerned. We can attack better and defend better. We started three months ago so I am very happy where we are now," Maresca continued.

"The important thing is the feeling is good. We play nine games already. I am not looking at the table at the moment. If you do that sometimes you can be confused.

"The players are understanding every day what we are working for. The fans can enjoy and dream.

"Us as a club and as players, we need to understand there are many things we can do better."

For Newcastle, meanwhile, they have now failed to win in their last five games in the Premier League. Their last joint longest winless streak was from 21st January 2023 to 4th March 2023.

"I think you go through all types of cycles as a manager," Howe said on whether his side's current form is emotionally draining.

"You understand the difficult moments and you just have to ride through them knowing you'll come back again.

"The attitude of the players gives me the most heart and that's the most important thing."

With Anthony Gordon missing with a groin injury, Newcastle lacked a clinical threat in the final third, with only three of their 11 shots on target during the game, something the Magpies boss alluded to in his post-match assessment.

"I think it's just the final bit in both boxes where we didn't defend the two moments well enough and I felt we had enough positive actions to score more," Howe continued. 

"Hopefully the goal will go a long way to ridding ourselves of that. No one can change it but us and we'll continue to attack games and attack teams."

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario admitted his side lacked fight following their 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The north London side conceded the eventual winner in the 31st minute as Jean-Philippe Mateta fired past Vicario at the back post.

It was a lacklustre showing upfront from the visitors, too, as they managed only three shots on target throughout the match, resulting in an expected goals (xG) total of just 0.72.

Vicario was candid about the lack of hunger from his side, as their total of 11 shots in the game marked their lowest total in a single match in the Premier League this season.

"They fight and I think we lacked that today. We are disappointed because we have to fight. We play good football but maybe sometimes we lack the desire to fight. They show a real desire to fight for something,” he told Sky Sports.

"I just want to focus on us and what we didn't do as a team. I think we lacked a bit of energy and to be better than them. We have to take this personally and it has to hurt us a lot. Football gives us an opportunity again and we have to be ready for the cup."

Tottenham were without captain Son Heung-Min, who is also their joint-top scorer this season (three) with a total of five goal contributions.

"He is the captain but we have a big squad and we have to deal with that. We have to be able to win games without Son. We lacked in something, not in football, but attitude and fight," added Vicario on his captain’s absence.

The result represented only the second win for Palace across their last 19 Premier League games against Tottenham (D2 L15), though both victories in that time have come at Selhurst Park while keeping a clean sheet.

Yet Ange Postecoglou’s side now have two defeats in their last three games and have failed to win any of their four away London derby matches in the Premier League in 2024 (D1 L3).

"It was one of those games with a lot of stoppages and battles and they ended up winning a lot of them and coming out on top. There was a lot of disruption and it was hard to get any fluency. They did better than us,” Postecoglou told BBC Match of the Day.

"It turned into a game they were thriving on and we should have dealt with it better. It was a poor goal to concede, it had nothing to do with playing out from the back. That can happen.

"I'd be very surprised if they were happy right now. Why would I be happy? If I'm unhappy then they'll be unhappy. If you're suggesting that our fans weren't happy with today then that's a fair assessment."

Bayern Munich swept aside VfL Bochum 5-0 on Sunday to head back to the top of the Bundesliga.

Vincent Kompany's team were beaten 4-1 by Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek, but bounced back in style at Vonovia Ruhrstadion.

Michael Olise put them ahead with a fantastic free-kick in the 16th minute, with in-form Jamal Musiala heading home a second soon after.

Apart from an early chance that was cleared off the line by Kim Min-Jae, Bochum were no match for Bayern's power and the visitors struck three more times after the break.

Harry Kane grabbed a customary goal before Leroy Sane got in on the act and Kingsley Coman rounded off the victory.

Bayern are on 20 points, ahead of second-placed RB Leipzig on goal difference.

Champions Bayer Leverkusen are in third place on 15. Bochum remain anchored in last place with one point from eight games.

United were denied by the woodwork again in the 40th minute when Christian Eriksen’s corner was glanced onto the bar by Hammers midfielder Edson Alvarez, but it was West Ham who made the breakthrough in the second half.

Summerville tapped home in the 74th minute to punish United's wastefulness, but Casemiro nodded the equaliser from close range seven minutes later.

However, Bowen’s late penalty handed Julen Lopetegui's side a much-needed win and saw them leapfrog their opponents into 13th place.

Jean-Philippe Mateta made the difference as Crystal Palace beat Tottenham 1-0 to claim their first Premier League win of the season.

Coming off the back of three straight defeats, the pressure was on Oliver Glasner, and his team delivered the goods for their fans at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

Their winner came in the 31st minute when Mateta latched onto Eberechi Eze’s clever flick and drilled in from close range.

Brennan Johnson had the best chance for the visitors when his shot struck the post before seeing the rebound cleared off the line by Trevor Chalobah.

But Palace looked most likely to get the game’s second goal, and Eze saw one ruled out for offside while Adam Wharton was thwarted by Guglielmo Vicario.

The Eagles were not made to pay for failing to add a second, however, as they claimed a morale-boosting result that takes them up to 17th, while Tottenham are eighth after two defeats from their last three league matches.

Cole Palmer led Chelsea back into the Premier League’s top four, with his seventh top-flight goal of the season seeing the Blues edge out Newcastle United 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Palmer, who saw an early strike disallowed for offside, was integral to both of Chelsea’s goals on Sunday, playing a stunning pass in the build-up to Nicolas Jackson’s 18th-minute opener.

Alexander Isak drew the visitors level with his first goal since returning from a toe injury, tucking home from a cross by former Chelsea youngster Lewis Hall.

But Palmer got his name on the scoresheet early in the second half, with his effort squeezing in at Nick Pope’s near post, with Newcastle unable to find a response.

Chelsea’s triumph moved them, at least temporarily, into fourth spot, five points ahead of 12th-placed Newcastle.

While Palmer will receive plaudits for his contribution to Chelsea’s victory, it was also an impressive outing for Neto, who was one of the Blues’ most potent attacking threat.

But Jackson also continued his fine scoring form, with his strike now seeing him involved in 14 goals in his last 14 Premier League appearances (10 goals, four assists).

Jackson’s opener also saw him become the fifth-quickest player to reach 20 goals in the top-flight for Chelsea, reaching that tally in 44 games, one fewer than Hernan Crespo.

Marc Casado praised Barcelona’s daring high line following a resounding 4-0 Clasico victory against Real Madrid in LaLiga.

The win put an end to Madrid’s aspirations of a record unbeaten run in the league as they were unable to equal Barcelona’s streak of 43 games without loss between 2017 and 2018.

Instead, the Santiago Bernabeu witnessed a finessed Hansi Flick offside trap as the hosts were caught offside a whopping eight times in the first half, representing their joint most on record (since 2003-04) in a single LaLiga match, equalling their tally against Celta Vigo in March 2013. 

They were ultimately caught out 12 times in total, and Barcelona midfielder Casado, who bagged an assist, was enamoured by his side's defensive display.

"It's incredible, to have the b**** to have the defensive line this high," he said in the mixed zone.

"We've been doing it all season, the defensive work of this team is spectacular. It's incredible and at the moment it's working for us."

His delight was unsurprising. Barcelona managed to nullify the Real Madrid threat with forward Kylian Mbappe caught offside eight times through the duration of the match.

It is the most by any player in a single game in Europe's top five leagues since Karim Benzema against Eibar in November 2018.

Barcelona were firing at the other end too, as Robert Lewandowski bagged a brace before Lamine Yamal and Raphinha doubled their margin of victory late on.

It means Barcelona now have 10 wins in 11 games so far this season under Flick, leaving them six points clear at the top of LaLiga.

Goalkeeper Inaki Pena, who came through the ranks at Barcelona, has been impressed by the turnaround in form since the coach's off-season arrival.

"I'm super happy now, I am a proper Culer. We suffered a lot towards the end of last season, it was a tough time," he told Barca's official media channels.

"Flick came in and just told us how much we had to believe in ourselves, on a personal level and on a collective level."

Both Casado and Pena came through La Masia, which remains a key source of talent for the Catalan giants.

"We know that this club always brings out very good players from the academy, I don't know how it happens but it always comes out. The work at La Masia is spectacular and that's why we arrive so prepared for the elite," Casado added.
