Jamaican star Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard once again proved why she is one of the most dominant forces in world netball, delivering a scintillating 63-goal performance from 66 attempts to spearhead the West Coast Fever to a record-breaking 73-56 victory over the Giants at RAC Arena on Sunday.
In front of a record home crowd of 11,899, the reigning MVP led the charge as Fever claimed their 11th consecutive win of the season — the most in Suncorp Super Netball history — and sealed the minor premiership with a fortnight still to play. The triumph also ensured that the Perth-based outfit will host the major semi-final, placing them one win away from a fourth grand final appearance and a shot at a second title, following their 2022 triumph.
It was also a landmark occasion for Jamaican defender Kadie-Ann Dehaney, who brought up her 100th game in the league. Dehaney was introduced in the second quarter and played a key role in stabilizing the Fever defence during a brief patch of momentum for the Giants.
The visitors, sitting seventh on the table, threatened an upset early on with strong performances from Jo Harten and Matisse Letherbarrow, the latter nailing five super shots to keep the Giants in touch. However, a dominant third quarter from the Fever — outscoring the Giants by nine — proved the difference.
Fowler-Nembhard, who shook off a quiet start and physical attention from the Giants’ defenders, was unstoppable once she settled. Her towering presence and accuracy inside the circle gave Fever the edge when the game tightened. Wing attack Alice Teague-Neeld also had a standout performance, tallying 28 goal assists and 46 feeds in a clinical midcourt showing that boosted her national team credentials.
Defensively, Sunday Aryang was a standout and earned best-on-court honours with seven gains, four deflections, and three intercepts, setting the tone from the opening minutes by forcing a turnover on the Giants’ first attack.
Fever overcame several disruptions throughout the match. They were forced into a late change before the opening whistle after Jordan Cransberg was ruled out with illness. Uncapped Caitlyn Brown was named in the squad and eventually made her Super Netball debut late in the final quarter, capping the game with two gains in eight composed minutes on court.
There was a concerning moment early in the third when Zoe Cransberg was forced off after a heavy collision with Jamie-Lee Price. Cransberg was sent for a concussion test, forcing a reshuffle with captain Jess Anstiss moving to centre and the defensive structure adjusting.
Despite the setback, the Fever responded like true title contenders. Olivia Wilkinson stepped in to support Fowler-Nembhard in the circle, while the team’s all-court defence stifled the Giants’ attacking flow. By the final break, Fever led by 13 goals and never looked back.
The result places the Fever firmly in the conversation as the most dominant team in league history, not only for their current run but also for their consistency over the past few seasons.
As they now look ahead to the semi-final, with a grand final berth on the line, few would bet against Fowler-Nembhard and the Fever lifting the trophy once again.
