Jamaica's Robert Simpson and Maureen Caesar experienced a rollercoaster of results on Days 2 and 3 of the 2025 World Bowls Indoor Championships, as they battled against elite competition from across the globe in singles and mixed pairs action.
After a difficult opening day, the Jamaican duo rebounded well on Day 2, notching a confident mixed pairs win over Switzerland’s Claudia Lehmann and Beat Matti. Simpson and Caesar combined efficiently to take the match 15-13, earning 3 match points to secure their first win of the tournament and restore some momentum in their campaign.
However, Simpson’s form in the Men’s Singles was tested later in the day where he came up against Hungary’s Gabor Foti. Despite a competitive showing and managing to win a set, Simpson ultimately lost on points as Foti took the match with 3 match points to Simpson’s 0, keeping the Jamaican skip winless in singles play.
Day 3 brought a harsher reality for the Jamaicans. Simpson returned to the green in the Men’s Singles but was outclassed by Wales’ Ross Owen, who delivered a commanding performance, winning 26-4 in sets and taking all 3 match points. Simpson failed to register a set or match point in the encounter.
The struggles continued for Simpson and Caesar in the Mixed Pairs, where they faced a dominant South African team of Jason Evans and Estelle Kruger. The South Africans were ruthless, cruising to a 27-4 win and collecting the full 3 match points, leaving the Jamaicans with nothing to show from the match.
There was no respite for Caesar either, as she faced England’s Emily Kernick in the Women’s Singles. Despite her best efforts, Caesar found herself overwhelmed by Kernick’s precision and consistency. The English bowler won both sets comfortably, conceding only 4 points across the match, as Caesar was once again shut out from the match points tally.
As the competition enters its final stretch, Simpson and Caesar will be eager to bounce back in their remaining fixtures, looking to build on their promising mixed pairs victory from Day 2. The learning curve has been steep, but the experience gained at this level will undoubtedly serve Jamaica’s indoor bowlers well in future international competition.
