Barbados Golf Association (BGA) president David Phillips is brimming with pride as Emily Odwin carved her name into the history books, becoming the first Barbadian ever to qualify for a major golf championship after topping the US Women’s Open Qualifier on Monday.

"This remarkable milestone is a testament to your unwavering dedication, exceptional talent, and relentless pursuit of excellence. You have not only made history but have also inspired countless aspiring golfers across Barbados and the Caribbean," Phillips declared in a statement released on Tuesday.

Odwin, a standout junior at Southern Methodist University (SMU), produced rounds of 68 and 71 to card a 3-under 139, sharing top honours with Sarah Lim of Saratoga, California, in the 36-hole qualifier held at The Olympic Club’s Lake Course in San Francisco.

Competing against a field of 76 players—a mix of amateurs and professionals—Odwin’s brilliance secured one of only three coveted spots for the 2024 US Women’s Open presented by Ally Financial, scheduled for May 28 to June 1, where she will be among nearly 2,000 players from around the world to compete at Erin Hills Golf Course in Wisconsin.

Phillips, on behalf of the BGA, praised the significance of the achievement.

"Your hard work and determination have truly paid off, and we are thrilled to see you represent our nation on such a prestigious global stage," Phillips said as he hailed the landmark achievement by Odwin.

Odwin’s ascent to the highest level of the women’s game has been building steadily. A runner-up at the 2024 Women’s Amateur Latin America tournament, she has continued to make strides in her collegiate career. This season, she boasts a scoring average of 72.47, the sixth-best in SMU history, and her career mark of 72.50 ranks second all-time at the Texas-based institution. In the current campaign alone, she has registered 14 rounds of par or better.

Up next for the rising Barbadian star is the NCAA Columbus Regional, set for May 5–7 at the Scarlet Course of Ohio State University. The Mustangs, looking to qualify for their third consecutive NCAA Championship, will battle a strong 12-team field that includes powerhouse programs such as Arkansas, LSU, and Ohio State.

"As you prepare for this incredible opportunity, know that the entire Barbados Golf Association and your fellow countrymen are behind you, cheering you on every step of the way. We have no doubt that you will continue to shine and make us all proud with your skill, grace, and sportsmanship," Phillips ended.
