Jamaica's first long-jump World Champion in sync with 'world's greatest coach'

By Donald Oliver & Ricardo Chambers October 28, 2019

Jamaica’s first-ever male global field events champion Tajay Gayle has likened himself to World-renowned coach Stephen Francis.

Despite his success guiding a host of World and Olympic champions, Francis’ often combative approach has often caused tension with many of his athletes as well as the local governing body, The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association, JAAAs.

However Gayle who jumped a National record 8.69 metres to win Long Jump Gold at the 17TH IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar described his relationship with Francis as normal.

“People say I remind them of coach, so basically for me it was just normal because everything he does is the same thing I would do.”

The seemingly shy 23-year-old gave insight into his life and personality including his night life.
