Steffen Freund believes Jadon Sancho is good enough to play for Liverpool or Manchester United but warned the winger he risks becoming the next Luka Jovic if he leaves Borussia Dortmund too soon.

Manchester City academy product Sancho, 20, has been linked with a move back to the Premier League after scoring and assisting a combined 30 goals for Dortmund in the Bundesliga this season.

However, former BVB midfielder Freund cited the example of Real Madrid flop Jovic as to how a big-money move to a new club at such a young age can hamper a player's development.

Jovic starred in the German top flight with Eintracht Frankfurt last season with 17 goals, but the 22-year-old has scored only twice in an underwhelming debut campaign in Madrid and has been linked with a move away.

Freund, who spent five years with Dortmund from 1993, is worried Sancho's career could go the same way if he makes the wrong choice when the transfer window opens for business.

"Jadon is ready to play for Liverpool or Man United, no question, because his stats are unbelievable. That shows that he can take the next step," he told talkSPORT.

"In the Borussia Dortmund side with [Erling] Haaland, [Julian] Brandt improving, with Emre Can signing, with changing to a back three – that suits Sancho.

"It would be good for him to play for Borussia Dortmund now and next year so that he will have more match time.

"He's only 20, so why not play for Borussia Dortmund? We're not talking about Freiburg or Paderborn; we're talking about Borussia Dortmund, one of the top 20 clubs in Europe.

"Remember Jovic, who moved to Real Madrid from Eintracht Frankfurt – he's not playing. If you have an offer from Real Madrid you think, 'I have to go'.

"No, you don't have to go because the salaries in the Bundesliga are on a good level, too – not as much as Real Madrid or the Premier League, though.

"But you can earn good money and improve and not make too much of a big step at once.

"So, for Jadon to move to Man United with that pressure, they are struggling to qualify for the Champions League, so maybe it's better to stay another year in Dortmund."

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc revealed last month he does not believe any teams will risk spending big for Sancho amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to clubs across the world facing a significant loss of earnings.

Freund has suggested it may be best for any interested parties to hold off from tabling an offer for the English youngster, who is reportedly valued well in excess of €100million, until BVB feel forced to cash in.

"If the offer comes in and the people from Borussia Dortmund think it's right then they will sell him," he said.

"With the coronavirus, if something goes wrong in the Bundesliga and we can't see football until the end of the year, then it's not the right moment to talk about players, they cost so much money.

"I think the price will drop anyway. All the clubs in Germany are losing a lot of money.

"It's not the same without money from tickets and sponsors and so it'll be difficult to keep your best players."

RB Leipzig's Timo Werner is the first name on the list, which also includes Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, United forward Anthony Martial, Madrid striker Luka Jovic and Victor Osimhen of Lille.

Luka Jovic only wants to triumph at Real Madrid and hear the Santiago Bernabeu chant his name, according to personal trainer Bojan Custic amid doubts over the forward's future.

Jovic has struggled to live up to the hype since his reported €60million move from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, where he scored 27 goals in 2018-19.

The 22-year-old Serbia international has only managed two goals in 24 appearances for Madrid, while he has been linked to Borussia Dortmund as a possible makeweight in a deal to bring Erling Haaland to the Spanish capital.

Jovic – who has been criticised for breaching self-isolation procedures in Serbia amid the coronavirus pandemic – has also emerged as a reported transfer target for Premier League outfit Arsenal.

But Custic told Diario AS: "He has told me that he only wants to triumph at Real Madrid, have a great career and for the Bernabeu to chant his name. And he is sure that he is going to achieve all of that.

"A lot of his team-mates are talking with him and trying to help him and he is absolutely fine. He is going to demonstrate his true potential, he just needs to be patient."

LaLiga was suspended last month due to COVID-19 but Jovic has tried to stay fit for when, and if, the 2019-20 campaign resumes.

"He is in top shape and he feels healthy and well in every sense," Custic said. "Luka trains at home for three hours every day. Every morning we have a one-hour session and in the afternoon, two hours of high-intensity training, a physically more demanding workout.

"He has a treadmill at home, an exercise bike as well as other training equipment so we use all of that for our training sessions. We have been doing workouts that are specifically designed for footballers - thinking about the movements they make and what kind of exercise is required.

"Every 14 days we revise how his training sessions have gone and analyse his level of fitness."

Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic "is in a bit of a crisis", but Aleksandar Mitrovic is confident his Serbia team-mate will improve with more game time.

Jovic arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu last June for a reported €60million, having scored 17 Bundesliga goals and 10 in the Europa League for Eintracht Frankfurt during the 2018-19 season.

However, the 22-year-old has scored just twice in 24 appearances – eight of which have come from the start – in all competitions with Madrid, completing the 90 minutes just once.

It has been reported Los Blancos could look to move Jovic on at the end of the season, perhaps as a makeweight in a deal to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. Arsenal are also said to be keen if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leaves Emirates Stadium in the next transfer window.

Mitrovic has no doubt Jovic, who drew criticism for breaching self-isolation procedures after returning to Serbia during the coronavirus pandemic, has the ability to make the grade at Madrid and thinks he just needs a decent run in the team from Zinedine Zidane.

"Luka is in a bit of a crisis," Mitrovic told Butasport. "When you are a striker, the most important thing is that you're on the pitch. That's my view.

"I don't think he was on the field that much and didn't get that much of a chance. I was in such a situation at Newcastle. You just get a chance for five, 10, 15, 20 minutes, and during that time you literally try to do what you should do and shouldn't do, to show everyone that you are worth it, especially when you play in such a big club. You want to do everything and you burn out in that desire.

"I think he just needs time to be on the pitch more. I'm convinced that with two or three 90-minute games the goals will come, but he is in that situation now and he has to continue work, believe in himself, train, and everything else will come.

"Goals are like ketchup. When you shake it, it won't come out, and then when it comes, more comes out than expected. The most important thing is that he works and continues to train, be persistent and not give up.

"I have told him a couple of times that he really has everything required to be a great attacker.

"Playing at Real Madrid also carries a lot of pressure, responsibility and all that stuff, but again I say, he is young, has many seasons and a lot of football ahead."
