Olivier Giroud powered in a stoppage-time header as Chelsea beat Rennes 2-1 to book a place in the last 16 of the Champions League with two games to spare.

Frank Lampard's side won the reverse fixture 3-0 earlier this month but they were made to work a lot harder for Tuesday's victory - their sixth in a row in all competitions.

Serhou Guirassy looked to have rescued a point for Rennes when he cancelled out Callum Hudson-Odoi's first-half opener in the 85th minute at Roazhon Park.

But second-half substitute Giroud won it in added time to ensure Chelsea will progress from Group E along with Sevilla.

  • Lakers sign three-time All Star Marc Gasol Lakers sign three-time All Star Marc Gasol

Three-time NBA All-Star Marc Gasol has joined the Los Angeles Lakers.

The 35-year-old center has reportedly signed a two-year deal with the champions, who did not disclose terms of the deal.

Spaniard Gasol was drafted by the Lakers before his rights were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies 12 years ago.

The veteran started all but one of his 44 games for the Toronto Raptors last season, averaging 7.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 26.4 minutes per game.

Gasol played 839 times for the Grizzlies and Raptors combined, averaging 14.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.4 blocks in 33.0 minutes.

The 2013 NBA Defensive Player of the Year has featured in 94 playoff games, playing his part in the Raptors' historic 2019 title triumph.

He is one of just six players in the league to claim over 6,000 rebounds, 1,100 blocks and 350 three-pointers.

Gasol has also experienced success for his country, winning gold medals at the FIBA World Cup in 2006 and last year, as well as Olympic silver medals in 2008 and 2012.

The arrival of Gasol comes a day after the Lakers sent JaVale McGee and a future second-round pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Alfonzo McKinnie and Jordan Bell.

Montrezl Harrell also joined the Lakers in what has been a busy start to the week.

  • Hulk return to Porto would make Villas-Boas 'very proud' Hulk return to Porto would make Villas-Boas 'very proud'

Andre Villas-Boas says he and other Porto fans would be "very proud" if Hulk returns to the club.

The Brazilian forward has been tipped to return to Estadio do Dragao in 2021 after suggesting in a social media post that he will not be renewing his contract with Shanghai SIPG.

Hulk won 11 trophies with Porto, including four league titles and the 2010-11 Europa League, before moving to Zenit in 2012 for a reported fee of €60million.

He moved to the Chinese Super League four years later and has won the domestic league title and FA Super Cup.

Hulk played under Villas-Boas at Porto, Zenit and Shanghai SIPG, and the current Marseille head coach admits it would be something to celebrate if the 34-year-old returned to Portugal.

"I worked with him at three different clubs," he said. "I just want Hulk to choose freely.

"If he chooses Porto and Porto want it, it will probably be the last club of his career, and it will be something that makes us, Porto fans, very proud."

Villas-Boas' Marseille face Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday knowing a victory is required if they are to keep alive their chances of reaching the last 16.

The Ligue 1 side are bottom of Group C after losing their opening three games to Manchester City, Olympiacos and Porto, while they are the only team in this season's competition yet to score a goal.

They have managed just four shots on target in the 2020-21 group stage, the fewest of any team, while they have created only 12 chances, the lowest number alongside Shakhtar Donetsk.

Porto won the previous match 3-0 at home, but head coach Sergio Conceicao remains wary of underestimating their opponents.

"There are six competitive, very difficult games, and this one is no exception," he said.

"We have to look not only at the path [to qualify] but at the quality of them and their coach.

"I'm not lowering our expectations, which are to go there and win, but nothing is decided."
