Antonio Brown released from Patriots contract

By Sports Desk September 20, 2019

Antonio Brown has been released from his contract by the New England Patriots.

The news comes after multiple sexual assault allegations surfaced since the wide receiver joined the Patriots 11 days ago following his release by the Oakland Raiders.

Brown's former personal trainer accused him of sexual assault and rape in a civil lawsuit, while a second unidentified woman has also made allegations of sexual misconduct.

The 31-year-old has strongly denied the accusations through his attorney and he opted against discussing the matter further when he was questioned on Thursday in his first public comments since the allegations.

It emerged late on Thursday that the anonymous woman alleges Brown has sent threatening text messages to her following the accusations.

A statement from a Patriots spokesperson read: "The New England Patriots are releasing Antonio Brown. We appreciate the hard work of many people over the past 11 days, but we feel that it is best to move in a different direction at this time."

In a post on Twitter, Brown wrote: "Thanks for the opportunity appreciate @Patriots."

The Patriots signed Brown to a one-year contract worth up to $15million after he requested his release from the Raiders.

His time in Oakland was defined by a series of sagas that overshadowed their preparations for the 2019 season. Brown's time on the practice field for the Raiders was limited due to foot injuries sustained by wearing incorrect footwear in a cryotherapy chamber.

The seven-time Pro Bowler then became embroiled in a dispute with the NFL over his preferred helmet being banned on safety grounds, before a heated exchange with Oakland general manager Mike Mayock, for which he was fined, led to his Raiders exit.

Oakland acquired Brown in March in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the four-time first-team All-Pro parting with the team that drafted him following an apparent breakdown in his relationship with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Brown caught four passes for 56 yards and a touchdown in his lone game for the Patriots, a 43-0 win over the Miami Dolphins.

Quarterback Brock Osweiler has retired from the NFL after seven seasons at the top level.

Osweiler, 28, was drafted by the Broncos with the 57th overall pick in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Arizona State.

He would go on to spend four years in Denver and help the Broncos win Super Bowl 50.

Before the 2016 season, Osweiler signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the Texans. His time in Houston lasted one season before getting traded to Cleveland and then he was released at the start of 2017. He returned to Denver on a one-year deal before spending the 2018 season with Miami.

“I’m extremely grateful for the time I did receive playing in the National Football League,’’ Osweiler said (via KUSA). "The experiences I did have, people I did meet, relationships I did make - I’m not going to dwell on the things that didn’t happen in my career."

  • Jalen Ramsey on trade from Jaguars to Rams: 'I'm overjoyed right now' Jalen Ramsey on trade from Jaguars to Rams: 'I'm overjoyed right now'

Jalen Ramsey is "overjoyed" to have been traded from the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Los Angeles Rams.

The cornerback was sent to the Rams in exchange for their 2020 and 2021 first-round picks, in addition to a 2021 fourth-round pick.

Ramsey told Sirius XM he was grateful to have been selected by Jacksonville in 2016, but that he's excited for a new opportunity in Los Angeles.

"Big, big day for me," he said. "I'm filled with joy, I'm overjoyed right now. God is the greatest, God makes no mistakes at all. No mistakes at all. I've been so blessed.

"I was so blessed to be drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars. But now I've got a new chapter starting in my life, going out to LA and going to be a part of the LA Rams."

Ramsey had been working his way from a back injury that kept him out of his team's past three games. He also missed some time last month to be with his family for the birth of his second daughter.

The two-time Pro Bowl star's back issues emerged after there was speculation around his long-term future with the Jaguars. He was involved in a heated exchange with coach Doug Marrone on the sideline during the team's Week 2 loss to the Texans, which led to Ramsey requesting a trade.

"Given the situation with Jalen, we made this decision based on what we thought is in the best interest of the Jacksonville Jaguars, for this season and well into the future," Jaguars executive vice-president of football operations Tom Coughlin said in a statement.

"We feel the trade that we struck with the Rams gives us great value for the next two drafts, and we remain very confident that our team today will compete this season for a division title. Jalen was a productive player, but the time came to move on and we wish him and his family the best in Los Angeles."

Ramsey has nine interceptions and 45 pass breakups throughout his four-year NFL career.

  • Pogba out for United against Liverpool, De Gea to be assessed Pogba out for United against Liverpool, De Gea to be assessed

David de Gea's fitness will be assessed ahead of Manchester United's Premier League clash with Liverpool, which Paul Pogba will miss.

Goalkeeper De Gea appeared to suffer a groin injury during Spain's 1-1 draw with Sweden in Euro 2020 qualifying on Tuesday.

Pogba, meanwhile, has been hampered by an ankle injury this season and played only twice for United in September.

He had taken part in warm-weather training in Dubai this week but will be reduced to the role of spectator on Sunday as United aim to deal their great rivals a first league defeat of the season.

Solskjaer does not expect De Gea to be fit for the visit of the league leaders but will wait on the results of tests on the 28-year-old. Sergio Romero would likely deputise in his absence.

"No chance," Solskjaer said to Sky Sports of Pogba's hopes of playing in the fixture.

"Paul, he had an injury, came back, worked really hard, came back, played a couple of games, maybe played through the pain barrier.

"We had a scan after the Arsenal game and he needed a few weeks' rest in a boot. Hopefully he won't be too long but he won't make this game."

United go into this weekend's game in 12th position and 15 points behind Liverpool, who are eight points clear at the top having taken maximum points from their first eight league games.
