UANA postpones three regional championships because of the Coronavirus pandemic

By April 01, 2020

The Swimming Union of the Americas (UANA) has postponed the Pan American Masters Championship, the Pan American Water Polo Championship and the Pan American Artistic Championships due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The UANA Pan-American Masters Championship was scheduled to be held in Medellin, Colombia from June June 18-25, 2020 while the Water Polo Championships were set for Edmonton, Canada from July 4-12.

The Artistic Swimming Championships were going to be in Aruba from August 31- September 6.

Trinidad, Barbados, Jamaica and Aruba were likely to have teams at these championships.

However, in a letter to the federation presidents on Tuesday, UANA President Maureen Croes outlined the reasons behind the decision to postpone the respective competitions.

“Over the past few months, due to COVID-19, our lives have changed radically and unexpectedly. Every part of our society has been affected, and unfortunately our sports as well,” she said.

“The resulting economic, social and psychological impacts on our society are simply not foreseeable and will be lasting.

We have been monitoring the developments, following the recommendations, and we have been discussing the situation and status of our 2020 UANA events. At this moment, the most important thing is the health of everyone involved in our sports. Therefore, although it may seem exaggerated or premature, we have come to the difficult decision to postpone the events.”

UANA, Croes said, will continue to collaborate with the hosts to plan new dates for the events when the world has returned to a state that adequately allows for training and travel.
