Guardian's Bunny Shaw recognition, 'positive for Jamaica's football' - JFF President Michael Ricketts

By December 03, 2019

President of the Jamaica Football Federation Michael Ricketts has described as “another positive for Jamaica’s football’, the fact that Khadijah 'Bunny' Shaw has been named among the world’s top 100 female footballers by the UK Guardian.

Shaw, who led Jamaica to its very first FIFA Women World Cup final this past summer, and who now plays professionally in France for Bordeaux, came in at number 80 for The Guardian football writers.

“This may be the first time 22-year-old Shaw has appeared in this list but it certainly won't be the last,” they wrote.

“There was plenty of talk about Shaw being the exciting new talent going into the World Cup and, while Jamaica struggled in a tough group, Shaw's talent was evident. She scored four goals in two games during Jamaica's warm-up friendlies and since going professional in Division 1 Féminine with Bordeaux, Shaw has rarely looked back. Nine goals already this season leave her trailing only Ada Hegerberg in the scoring charts and it does appear the world is really at her feet at 22.”

Ricketts believes Shaw’s achievements demonstrate what is possible for talent coming out of Jamaica.

“It’s another positive for Jamaica’s football. Bunny Shaw would have been one of those who grew up learning the sport of football in Jamaica, in her community and at her primary school at Crescent (Primary School,” he said. “So she is, by and large, a fully home-grown talent.

“It is indeed a pleasure for her to have been so recognized. This is no ordinary achievement so congratulations are in order. I hope she stays focussed as the sky is the limit.”

Shaw has had the attention of The Guardian’s football writers for some time as in 2018 they named her their Female Footballer of the Year.

West Brom's slump continued with a shock 1-0 defeat at home to struggling Stoke City, with the Championship leaders now without a win in six league games.

The Baggies were boosted by being able to give Grady Diangana his first start in over a month, but he lasted only four minutes and the hosts failed to make the most of their chances as Tyrese Campbell's early goal proved decisive.

West Brom gave the ball away in midfield and Stoke pounced in the ninth minute, as Nick Powell released Tom Ince and he squared to Campbell, who beat Sam Johnstone from 12 yards.

Campbell was then forced off injured a 14 minutes later and Stoke unsurprisingly struggled in attack without him, though West Brom failed to get past Jack Butland at the other end, with Matheus Pereira guilty of a couple of suspect misses.

Victory lifts Stoke four points above the bottom three, while the Baggies remain only a point clear of Leeds United at the summit and five above third-place Fulham, with their game in hand now gone.

Barcelona have signed Rey Manaj from Albacete for an initial €700,000, with the former Inter striker agreeing a contract until June 2023.

The fee could rise by €2million in performance-based bonuses over the next three and a half years, with 22-year-old Manaj set to line-up for Barca B in the third tier.

After starting his senior career with Cremonese, the Albania international – who has a €50m release clause in his Barca contract – moved to Inter and made six appearances for the club during a stint that included loans to Pescara, Pisa and Granada.

Manaj joined Albacete in July 2018 on loan with an obligation to buy. He scored nine goals in 39 league appearances for the Segunda Division side.
