Alvas Powell scores brace as Jamaica drub Guyana 4-0 to extend Group C lead

By September 09, 2019

Jamaica extended their lead atop Group C of the CONCACAF Nations League on Monday night following a comprehensive 4-0 win over Guyana at the Synthetic Track and Field Facility in Leonora.

Braces from Alvas Powell (14’ and 26’)  and Dever Orgill (44’ and 55’) helped the Reggae Boyz thump the Golden Jaguars before their home crowd and maintain their 100 per cent win record.

Powell, who was scoring his first goals for Jamaica, opened the scoring when picked up the ball just inside the Guyanese half, dribbled past two players before driving a shot home at the Akel Clarke’s near post.

His second came 12 minutes when he again drove past two defenders, played a slick one-two with Shamar Nicholson before bundling the ball over the line to extend the visiting team’s lead.

Orgill added the third a minute before the break tapping in from the six-yard box to give the Reggae Boyz a handsome lead at the interval.

Without being overly impressive, Jamaica enjoyed 69 per cent possession in the half and could have had more. Bethlehem Steel forward Chevanne Willis should have scored late in the half but with only goalkeeper Clarke to beat dragged his shot wide from eight yards.

The Reggae Boyz were still hungry for goals on the resumption and it was soon 4-0 in the 55th minute when Nicholson’s shot was parried by Clarke into the path of Orgill who slammed it into the roof of the net.

However, Jamaica was unable to add to the score missing a few opportunities to extend the scoreline.

Guyana’s best opportunity for a consolation came near the end when Bolton Wanderers midfielder Stephen Duke-McKenna’s free kick was pushed onto the crossbar by Andre Blake.

The win moves Jamaica to the maximum six points from their two games having blanked Antigua and Barbuda 6-0 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Friday, September 6.

Despite the heavy defeat, Guyana remains second in the group on goal difference over Antigua and Barbuda who defeated Aruba 2-1 at the Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua earlier on Monday.

Goals from Deandre Bishop (8’) and Tevaughn Harriette (69’) were enough to give the Benna Boys the points over Aruba for whom Terence Groothusen scored in first-staff stoppage time.
