Jamaica international Darren Mattocks picked up where he left off following a hot preseason for Major League Soccer (MLS) club DC United after scoring for the club in 3-1 loss to Atlanta United on Sunday.

A slow start to the season, however, continued for DC United who remained winless following a 1-1 draw with Orlando City in the opening week.

Mattocks’ defense splitting goal in the 86th minute got DC United on the scoreboard, but by then the match was well and truly out of reach after earlier goals from Josef Martinez (24th) Miguel Almiron (73rd) and Hector Villalba (75th) had given Atlanta a sizable advantage.

The Jamaican joined D.C. United in the offseason from Portland Timbers and has immediately settled in with the squad, scoring several goals in the club’s preseason campaign.  Another Jamaica international Oniel Fisher also started for D.C. but had a difficult time along with the rest of the back line in repelling multiple waves of Atlanta United attacks.
