Milan raid Anderlecht for Belgian midfielder Saelemaekers

Milan have signed Belgian midfielder Alexis Saelemaekers from Anderlecht in a "dream" move for the youngster.

The 20-year-old has moved to San Siro on loan until the end of the Serie A season, with Milan having secured an option to then sign Saelemaekers permanently.

Saelemaekers has caught the eye for Anderlecht and is an under-21 international who the Belgian club believe has a bright future.

Milan said on their website that Saelemaekers would meet his new team-mates on Saturday before being presented at a news conference on Tuesday.

Anderlecht sporting director Michael Verschueren said: "Alexis caught the eye of a great club this season. It's wonderful for him and it's also a good sign for our training of youngsters.

"At his age, it's a dream you couldn't help but want to experience.

"I understand that fans would have preferred him not to go. But that's football today. When the big clubs like AC Milan knock on the door, you have to do the right thing."

Milan, who welcomed Zlatan Ibrahimovic back to the club in January, are on a high after winning their past three league games to climb to eighth in Serie A.

They also reached the Coppa Italia semi-finals with victory over Torino on Tuesday.

Verschueren told Anderlecht's website: "Milan conducted themselves very well in this matter with Anderlecht, so I think there are no losers.

"We obviously wish Alexis the best and we're proud to have coached him here."

  • Cavani to Boca Juniors? Hopefully very soon – Bermudez Cavani to Boca Juniors? Hopefully very soon – Bermudez

Boca Juniors sporting director Jorge Bermudez is hopeful Paris Saint-Germain star Edinson Cavani will join the Argentine giants "very soon".

Cavani is out of contract in June and the Uruguay international has been linked with a move away from PSG following his failed transfer to Atletico Madrid in January.

The 33-year-old – PSG's all-time leading goalscorer – has also reportedly emerged as a target for new MLS franchise Inter Miami.

But Bermudez believes Boca, where club legend Juan Roman Riquelme is now vice-president, can lure the PSG forward to Buenos Aires.

"Knowing Riquelme and the distance to [former Uruguay international Diego] Forlan, and knowing the category of Cavani, hopefully it will be very soon," Bermudez told Radio Cooperativa.

"He would give us a great hand and be very supportive. I think he wants to come to Boca."

Bermudez added: "If he comes it is for a real desire and the signs are clear."

Prior to the postponement of Ligue 1 and football due to coronavirus, Cavani had scored seven goals across all competitions in 2019-20.

Cavani has called Paris home since swapping Napoli for PSG in 2013.

Italian Footballers' Association (AIC) president Damiano Tommasi suggested the Serie A season could be over.

Serie A is suspended until Friday due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that postponement appears certain to be extended.

Italian sports minister Vincenzo Spadafora told La Repubblica he would push for sport, including training, to stop through all of April.

Tommasi said he was worried that could mean the end of the Serie A season, with the last game having been played on March 9.

"Tomorrow [Monday], they have one more element on the table than in the past weeks," he told ANSA on Sunday.

"Because, after the words of minister Spadafora, the concern is the championship will end here.

"We must therefore ask ourselves about the problem of ending the season from a sporting point of view and a contractual one."

Juventus held a one-point lead atop the Serie A table when the season was stopped with most teams having played 26 games.
