Icardi tells Inter he wants to stay

By Sports Desk May 17, 2019

Mauro Icardi has reaffirmed his commitment to Inter after "repeatedly" telling the Serie A club of his desire to stay beyond this season.

The Argentina striker took to social media on Friday to address reports in the Italian media which claimed he is angling for a move to champions Juventus.

Icardi, 26, is coming to the end of a difficult sixth season at San Siro which has seen him lose the captaincy and spend time nearly two months out of the first team amid conflicting views of an apparent knee injury.

He returned to the fold in April and has now moved to dismiss all transfer speculation.

"Since the press has recently reported news that does not reflect my thoughts and my will, I want to inform our fans that I have repeatedly informed the club of my intention to stay at Inter," Icardi said on Instagram.

"Thus, from now on, no misunderstandings of any kind will be created. I understand the interests of the press to sell fake news but I can't do anything more than to clarify things personally.

"I repeat: I have already expressed to Inter my desire to stay, because Inter is my family. Time will tell who told the truth.

"Forza Inter, always."

Icardi has scored 16 times in all competitions for Luciano Spalletti's side this term.

Inter still have two matches to play in Serie A, against Napoli and Empoli, with a victory in either match enough to secure Champions League qualification.

Ander Herrera backed Neymar to win the Ballon d'Or one day after the forward's impressive start to the season for Paris Saint-Germain continued.

Neymar scored his second late winner in as many games this campaign, leading PSG to a 1-0 victory over Lyon in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

The forward was heavily linked with a return to Barcelona during the transfer window, but ended up staying in Paris and has starred on his return.

Herrera, who arrived at PSG in July, believes the Brazil international is a future Ballon d'Or winner.

"I'm delighted to play with Neymar. I will not talk about his transfer window," the midfielder said, via L'Equipe.

"Now, Neymar is with us. He is a fantastic player who can be Ballon d'Or, this season, in a year, in two years.

"We are very happy. I hope he can play like that all season."

PSG's win saw them move seven points clear of ninth-placed Lyon, although their lead at the top is just three points to Angers and Nice.

But Herrera laughed off any suggestions the title was already won for Thomas Tuchel's men.

"No, there are only six matches. I just saw the table. There is Rennes, Angers, Marseille," he said.

"We respect a lot of teams and all opponents. We will always play with respect."

Mauro Icardi said he left Inter for Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain to win titles.

Icardi moved to PSG on an initial season-long loan, with the French giants reportedly holding the option to buy the striker for €70million.

The 26-year-old, who arrived at Inter from Sampdoria in 2013, scored 111 Serie A goals and 124 goals in all competitions to be eighth on the Nerazzurri's all-time list.

Icardi – stripped of the Inter captaincy last season and frozen out by head coach Antonio Conte – said the time was right to leave San Siro.

"I came here to play," Icardi told Canal+. "If you arrive with an option to buy, you know the player has to give his best to ensure the club decides to purchase him outright. We'll see what happens next summer.

"I was in my seventh year at Inter and my dream was to play in the Champions League with Inter, which I did last season, but we never won anything.

"I thought the time had come for me to go to a winning club, one that could challenge for and win titles. It's time for me to start winning.

"The truth is that PSG is a squad full of champions and that is what I wanted."

Icardi made his debut in PSG's 1-0 win over Strasbourg on September 14 before starting in last week's memorable 3-0 Champions League victory against Real Madrid.

However, the Argentina international missed Sunday's late triumph at Ligue 1 rivals Lyon.

"People call me a 'killer' in the penalty area. I am always ready in the box to score goals," Icardi added. "Ever since my debut when very young for Rosario, my objective and obsession has always been to score goals."

  • He can still do better – Tuchel wants more from Neymar after PSG winner He can still do better – Tuchel wants more from Neymar after PSG winner

Thomas Tuchel believes Neymar will get even better after another late winner for Paris Saint-Germain, while insisting the forward was "100 per cent" with the squad.

Neymar has quickly put an off-season transfer saga behind him, scoring two late winners in as many games, including in Sunday's 1-0 victory at Lyon.

Tuchel said the Brazil forward will improve at PSG, who hold a three-point lead atop the Ligue 1 table.

"He can still do better. It's only his second or third game in four months," the PSG head coach said, via L'Equipe.

"He can do better and he will do better because he will gain in a physical capacity, but it's Ney, he's always decisive. He always thinks to play forward, to attack.

"We need players like that in tough games like this to make a difference in one-on-ones."

Neymar was heavily linked with a return to LaLiga champions Barcelona during the close season, but ended up staying in Paris.

Tuchel said the 27-year-old forward was committed to PSG despite wanting the off-season move to Barca.

"He has a contract so of course he is 100 per cent with us," he said. "I can even confirm that he is 100 per cent involved with us on the field and 100 per cent in the group.

"He laughs a lot with his team-mates, it's normal for him and it's good for the team."

Tuchel added: "He is here to score, he is there to do decisive things so I am very demanding with him."
