Brisbane Roar 1-0 Central Coast Mariners: McDonald extends Mariners' misery

By Sports Desk March 13, 2020

Scott McDonald's close-range effort during first-half stoppage time proved the difference as Brisbane Roar claimed a 1-0 A-League win over Central Coast Mariners at Suncorp Stadium.

Bottom club Central Coast belied a run of consecutive losses that now stands at nine with an enterprising start to the contest, with Jordan Murray putting their best chance over the bar when under close attention from Aiden O'Neill.

The Roar grew into the contest and McDonald edged them ahead thanks to a VAR review, which showed Brad Inman had been incorrectly flagged offside when supplying the assist.

Robbie Fowler's Final Series aspirants move up to fourth in the table, two points above Perth Glory having played two games more.

  • In Sancho's footsteps – Bynoe-Gittens swaps Man City for Borussia Dortmund In Sancho's footsteps – Bynoe-Gittens swaps Man City for Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund have signed 16-year-old forward Jamie Bynoe-Gittens from Manchester City on a long-term contract.

Sporting director Michael Zorc confirmed the arrival of the City academy player, who has been capped by England at Under-17 level, during a media conference on Thursday.

Bynoe-Gittens follows in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, who was 17 when he left the Premier League giants for Dortmund in 2017.

Sancho departed City for a clearer path to first-team football and has become of the hottest properties in Europe after scoring 30 goals and setting up another 35 in 79 Bundesliga appearances.

"Jamie Bynoe-Gittens has joined us, and we are delighted to have him at in our youth set-up. He will initially play with the Under-19s," said Zorc.

"Our scouting department have done a fantastic job! He is a highly talented wide player, who will get the chance to develop at his own pace in our youth teams.

"We don't want expectations to be raised too high right from the start.

"He is still a year younger than Jadon was then … the hope is that at some point he will be promoted to the professional team."

Bynoe-Gittens becomes the third Englishman in Dortmund's ranks, alongside Sancho and 17-year-old playmaker Jude Bellingham.

  • Leeds complete Llorente capture Leeds complete Llorente capture

Leeds United have completed the signing of Diego Llorente from Real Sociedad for a reported £18.7million (€20m).

Sociedad announced on Tuesday that an agreement had been reached between the clubs and two days later Leeds confirmed Llorente had passed his medical and signed a four-year contract.

The 27-year-old is looking forward to working under Marcelo Bielsa and says he is ready to play against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Sunday if required.

He told a news conference: "For me, this step is very important. I think that I am doing the right thing. I hope to help my team-mates and to improve my football.

"I want to learn a lot off the coach. I think we can have a great season and I will give my best.

"The coach has been an important factor to be here. I think I can learn a lot from him and improve my football, so it's an honour for me to train and learn from Marcelo.

"It was a difficult few days for me with a lot of change in a short time, but I am always ready to help the team. I'm always ready to help the coach if he wants me to play right now."

The former Real Madrid centre-back joined Sociedad in 2017 following successful loan spells at Rayo Vallecano and Malaga in LaLiga.

Spain international Llorente will likely have to compete with captain Liam Cooper and new signing Robin Koch for a starting place in the centre of defence.

Leeds have three points from their opening two Premier League games, having bounced back from losing 4-3 at Liverpool to defeat Fulham by the same scoreline.
