Loftus-Cheek could be one of Europe's best - Sarri

By Sports Desk March 14, 2019

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri believes Ruben Loftus-Cheek has what it takes to become "one of the best midfielders in Europe".

An Olivier Giroud hat-trick and goals from Marcos Alonso and Callum Hudson-Odoi secured a resounding 5-0 win against Dynamo Kiev on Thursday as Chelsea booked their place in the Europa League quarter-finals with an 8-0 aggregate victory.

Despite not getting on the scoresheet, Sarri was impressed with Loftus-Cheek's contribution and thinks he has all the attributes to be one of the very best on the continent.

"He did very well, he is improving in the last month," he told BT Sport.

"He has been able to train after the problem with the back. He had a wonderful match and I'm really happy he could play for 90 minutes.

"His potential as a player is very, very, high. Physically, technically and tactically he is improving. He can become one of the best midfielders not only in England but in Europe."

Giroud's perfect hat-trick means he is the Europa League's top scorer this season with nine goals and Sarri was delighted with his display.

"Recently, every time he has been on the pitch, he has played really very well," he later told a media conference.

"He's scored nine goals in this competition. As you know very well, Olivier is a very important player. I'm really very happy for him."

Sarri's former club Napoli also progressed to the last eight on Thursday after a 4-3 aggregate win over Salzburg, but the Italian says he would only like to meet the Partenopei for the final in Baku on May 29.

"I prefer to face them in the final," he added.

"First of all, because it means we are in the final and I am happy with that. And second, it means that Napoli are in the final, and I am happy.

"You know very well my relationship with the city, with the people. So, for me, it will be very difficult to play against them in Naples."

  • Zorc knows nothing of United interest in Sancho Zorc knows nothing of United interest in Sancho

Borussia Dortmund director Michael Zorc says he does not know of any interest in Jadon Sancho from Manchester United.

England winger Sancho has enjoyed a breakout season in the Bundesliga, establishing himself as one of Europe's top young stars with a string of standout displays.

As well as Three Lions recognition, the 19-year-old has reportedly attracted the attention of potential suitors in the Premier League.

Sancho, who left Manchester City for Dortmund in 2017, is said to be a target for United, yet Zorc is not interested in such speculation.

"I have no knowledge of [United's interest]," Zorc told Bild. "But it has no relevance anyway."

Zorc has previously insisted that Sancho will remain at Dortmund next season, even if he is likely to leave the German club eventually.

Sancho, who has also been linked with Paris Saint-Germain, has eight goals in 26 league games this season.

  • Sterling has qualities to be England captain - Southgate Sterling has qualities to be England captain - Southgate

Gareth Southgate believes star forward Raheem Sterling has the qualities to captain England in the future.

Sterling has established himself as a key man for the Three Lions and is enjoying a rich vein of form, netting a hat-trick against the Czech Republic on Friday after scoring twice in Spain late last year.

The Manchester City talisman is also acting as a mentor for young prospects Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi, while he was widely praised for commenting on perceived racial discrimination earlier this season.

England boss Southgate has seen enough to know that, should the side be without skipper Harry Kane, Sterling would be ready to step into a leadership role.

"We've had three or four players captaining the team, and Raheem is developing lots of the qualities those guys have," Southgate told reporters ahead of Monday's meeting with Montenegro.

"He has those qualities. It's difficult to talk about a potential captain when the captain [Kane] is in the hotel waiting to go out for dinner, but in terms of his personal qualities, he's shown some outstanding personal qualities."

The Three Lions manager has already introduced Sterling to the team's senior leadership group, explaining: "In between November and March, observing his maturity and influence, I felt that would be a good step for him.

"I think when you speak to other young players, he's one of the first they speak about making them feel really comfortable in the environment. That was a really important move for him."

  • Morocco frustrated by Messi's friendly absence Morocco frustrated by Messi's friendly absence

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) sought clarity regarding Lionel Messi's injury, having been frustrated to learn that Argentina would be without their star man for Tuesday's friendly.

Messi made his return to the international stage last week, but Argentina were beaten 3-1 by Venezuela in Madrid and the Barcelona star was later revealed to be suffering with a pelvic injury.

That ailment will keep Messi out of Argentina's trip to Tangier, as was confirmed to Morocco in a letter on Saturday.

But having agreed with Argentina that their best team would be on show, the FRMF asked for a further explanation, seemingly seeking to ensure Messi's injury is genuine.

A statement from the federation read: "The FRMF on Saturday received a letter from the agent of the friendly match against Argentina, officially confirming the absence of Lionel Messi.

"According to the same letter, the agent confirmed that the Argentine Football Association said that Messi had been injured in a match against Venezuela on Friday in Madrid, and that he directly joined Barcelona for treatment.

"The FRMF asked for clarification from the match agent, approved by the Argentine Football Federation, after news of Messi's absence from Tuesday's match in Tangier.

"It is worth noting that the FMRF had agreed in the contract organising this friendly match to face Argentina's first team."

Morocco were held to a 0-0 draw by Malawi in an African Nations Cup qualifier on Friday.
