Melbourne City 1 Brisbane Roar 0: Emergency striker De Laet nets winner

By Sports Desk January 11, 2019

Ritchie de Laet's deployment as an emergency striker paid off for Melbourne City on Friday as his well-taken goal earned a 1-0 A-League win over Brisbane Roar.

City boss Warren Joyce is working with limited forward options as regular starter Bruno Fornaroli continues to be left out in the cold following a reported row with the head coach.

Rumours this week suggested City and Perth Glory could agree a swap deal involving Fornaroli and Andy Keogh but the temporary solution of selecting right-back De Laet as a lone frontman paid dividends at AAMI Park against the beleaguered Roar.

After visiting goalkeeper Jamie Young had twice denied Lachlan Wales in the first half and then superbly tipped over Scott Jamieson's curling effort early in the second, De Laet struck in the 52nd minute.

Rostyn Griffiths delivered a cross from the right and De Laet showed the finishing touch of a seasoned forward to sweep home first time beyond Young for his second goal in three games.

Roar piled on the pressure in the closing stages - Nicholas D'Agostino forcing a fine stop from Eugene Galekovic before Eric Bautheac blazed the rebound wide four minutes from time - but an inability to find an equaliser meant Brisbane's sorry run stands at just one point taken from eight games.

City, meanwhile, have won four and drawn one of their past five outings to move level with Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC in a three-way tie for second, six points adrift of leaders Perth.

Jamaica international Omar Gordon has joined USL Championship club OKC Energy in a move away from Jamaican Premier League club Montego Bay United.

The 27-year-old striker is fresh from completing a loan spell at USL Western Conference team San Antonio where he made a solid impression.  Gordon scored six goals in seven appearances and notched four assists.

Locally, Gordon made a measurable impression with 125 appearances for Montego Bay United, a club he joined in 2011.  He scored 37 goals and helped the club to the Jamaican National Premier League title in 2014 and 2016.

Energy FC Head Coach Steve Cooke admitted he was pleased to have acquired the player’s services.

“Having watched him at close quarters playing for San Antonio last year, we always knew he was a threat against us, “Cooke said.

“He’s big, he’s strong, he’s powerful and he’s got the pace to get in behind – great 1-v-1 attacking defenders. I think he can contribute goals, assists and really take the game to the other teams.”

Gordon has also previously competed on loan in the United States with Indy Eleven during the 2016 season when he recorded three goals in 20 appearances for the club.
