Kingston College overturns 32 years of failure to claim Manning Cup title

By November 30, 2018

Kingston College (KC) are Manning Cup champions againt after 32 years of watching others lift the coveted urban area football crown.

KC were forced to come from behind twice to claim a 3-2 victory in a game that had all the ingredients for high frama.

Damani Harris netted in the 33rd minute for St George’s College to put KC on the back foot, before their marksman, Travone Reid equalized in the 52nd.

Things seemed to get worse for KC when Chantamoi Taylor headed home a what St Goerge’s would have thought was a 72nd minute winner.

However, the plot was not done yet and Taylor would miss a sitter that should have put St George’s up 3-1, but not long after his miss, KC would score again through Michael Allen, an unusual suspect giving KC a lead they would not relinquish.

Allen’s 72nd minute strike was made even more interesting when Nathan Thomas buried his deflected shot in the 90th minute to crush the hearts of the Georgians, relegating them to runners-up.

KC got the first real chance of the game, as Ari Rodgers rounded the George’s custodian after receiving a beautiful pass, only to shank the delivery badly wide.

St George’s would punish Rodger’s profligacy almost immediately with a series of one touch passes among three players in the middle of the field, that finally ended with Harris who had the simple task of slotting past the KC custodian.

But KC would not go away and rightly found the equalizer, although through fortuitous meand.

Reid, pounced on a rebound from the George’s custodian. Orville Smikle probably would have wanted a do over from a long distance strike that really had no venom. The rebound, which fell to Reid, was passed between his legs and KC were back to business.

George’s would go ahead again, after a corner found the head of their marksman, Taylor. The header was sublime and left KC ‘keeper, Nathaniel Francis, with no chance.

At 2-1, St George’s, like KC did at 0-0, had a brilliant opportunity to go ahead after Harris received a pass with the goal gaping in front of him and the goalkeeper already beaten.

Inexplicably, he struck his delivery over the bar. His wry smile afterward was something like a foreshadowing.

KC would then equalize after the St George’s goalkeeper again spilled a save into the path of an attacker, before George’s were laid to waster with a shot from skipper, Thomas, which deflected past Smikle and that’s all she wrote.
