The Bhilwara Kings opened the 2023 Legends League Cricket season with a brilliant three-wicket win over the India Capitals at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Saturday.

The Kings won the toss and chose to field first, quickly regretting that decision when the Capitals got off to a magnificent start with the bat.

After losing South African Hashim Amla early for 3, former India opener Gautam Gambhir and former West Indies batsman Kirk Edwards put on 107 for the second wicket before Gambhir fell for a 35-ball 63 in the 11th over.

Edwards went on to make the next highest score in the innings with 59 off 31 balls while Ben Dunk (37) and Ashley Nurse (34) also made solid contributions as the Capitals got what they thought would be a match-winning total of 228-8 off their 20 overs.

Anureet Singh took 4-29 from his four overs for the Kings.

Bhilwara’s opening pair of Lendl Simmons and Solomon Mire then put on only 22 for the first wicket before Simmons was first to go for 11.

It was quickly 27-2 when Tillakaratne Dilshan went for just one.

Mire and new batsman Robin Bist then put on 67 for the third wicket before Bist went in the 11th over for 30 leaving the Kings 94-3.

Mire was next to go, 40 runs and three overs later for a well-made top score of 70 from 40 balls including nine fours and three sixes.

Eventually, the Kings were 186-7 in the 18th over before captain Irfan Pathan performed a miracle to help them get over the line at 229-7 in 19.2 overs.

Pathan made 65* off just 19 balls including one four and nine sixes.

Isuru Udana took 3-51 from his four overs for the Capitals.

South Africa batting great Hashim Amla has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket at the age of 39.

Amla scored 9,282 runs during a 15-year Test career with South Africa, second only to Jacques Kallis' remarkable tally of 13,206 in the longest format.

That return included 28 Test hundreds for the Proteas, while Amla also posted the country's first triple-century with his 311 not out against England at the Oval in 2012.

As well as his efforts in Test cricket, Amla scored a further 8,113 runs – including 27 centuries – in 181 ODIs and 1,277 runs in 44 T20Is.

Having retired from international cricket in August 2019, Amla wrapped up his career in the domestic game by helping Surrey win the County Championship in 2022.

"I have great memories of the Oval ground and to finally leave it as a player fills me with immense gratitude for what has been," Amla told Surrey's website.

"A sincere thank you to [Surrey director of cricket] Alec Stewart and the entire Surrey staff, players and members for their support."

Stewart added: "Everyone at Surrey County Cricket Club will be sad to see Hashim retire, but we all applaud what has been a phenomenal career. He will quite rightly go down as a great of the game."

Kemar Roach took career-best figures of 8-40 and 10 wickets in the match as Surrey defeated Hampshire by an innings and 289 runs in their English County Cricket match that ended on Friday.

Roach began the match taking 2-40 in Hampshire’s first innings of 92 all out. However, it was Jordan Clarke who did the bulk of the damage taking 6-21. Lewis McManus top-scored with 31 for Hampshire in their innings that lasted just 34.3 overs.

The situation would only become even direr for Hampshire as 215 from Hashim Amla, 131 from Ollie Pope 131 and knocks of 80 and 78 from Jamie Smith and Roy Burns, respectively, propelled Surrey to 560 for 7 declared.

Roach then moved in for the kill.

Getting prodigious swing both ways, the Barbadian took three in eight balls towards the end of his first spell, two in seven in his second, and three in 13 in his third as Hampshire folded for 179 in their second turn at-bat.

“It was going conventionally, not reversing," Roach said.

"The way I gripped the ball was a little looser today. It was overcast conditions so the ball was going to do something once you put it in the right areas and stayed strong at the crease. The guys worked incredibly well on the ball and the information I got on the field about different batsmen and their weaknesses worked fantastically."

Once again, McManus was Hampshire’s top scorer with 51.

Roach’s 10-80 was also a career-best for the veteran West Indies pace bowler.
