Simmons not motivated by Windies revenge

By March 04, 2018

Former Windies coach Phil Simmons has downplayed the notion revenge will be a consideration should the regional team and his current charges Afghanistan face off in the ongoing ICC World Cup Qualifiers.

Simmons, 54, who took charge of the Asian team in December, could certainly be forgiven for harbouring hard feeling towards his former employers as they parted under acrimonious circumstances two years ago.

The coach, who played 26 Tests and 143 ODIs for the West Indies from 1987 to 1999, was sacked just five months after leading the team to the World Twenty20 title in India.  Prior to that Simmons was suspended for publicly criticising the team’s selection policy.

Heading into the tournament the Windies and Afghanistan, as the highest seeded teams, will be favourites to secure one of two spots to next year’s tournament and Simmons is adamant that it is getting there that will be his primary focus.

“I am not putting the ‘favorites’ tag on me. We have just come here to play cricket, we need to play proper cricket and win this tournament,” Simmons said.

“I am one of those who wants to win all the time, and I think these guys are the same,” he added.

“So, the more we will win, the easier it will get for us in the Super Six stage. You win the Super Six stage, you are in the World Cup as well as in the final. That’s how we look at it.”
