She didn’t win but Jamaica’s Briana Williams had a great time in Monte Carlo at the IAAF Athletics Awards Gala and it could serve as motivation for a return when perhaps, a trophy could be waiting.

Williams, 16, was among the five finalists for the I2018 AAF Rising Star Award that was deservedly won by the USA’s Sydney McLaughlin. It seemed to matter little to the IAAF World U20 100m and 200m champion.

“No way I could have had more fun tonight, even if I did win,” Williams said on her Facebook page.

“Congrats to the USA's Sydney McLaughlin, who won for Female Rising Star of 2018, and to all the other nominees and winners at the 2018 IAAF World Athletics Gala.”

Her coach Ato Boldon said McLaughlin deserved to win but believes that the experience of being on Monaco, could prove to be motivation for the Florida-based Williams, who set a world age-group record of 11.13 in Jacksonville, Florida just days before her 16th birthday.

“She’s 19-20 and I’d have voted for her too. She had a better year," Boldon told Sportsmax.TV, who said he saw something from her that suggests that the occasion just might prove to be inspirational.

“I spent a lot of tonight watching Briana during the show because I wasn’t seated next to her. She likes being here, she likes this sort of environment so I think she’s incentivized now to come back and win one.”

He also expressed his delight for Caterine Ibarguen winning the Female Athlete of the Year.

“Very happy for Caterine, that’s huge for South America,” he said.
