Danniel Thomas-Dodd, the 2018 Commonwealth Games champion, has revealed that injury was responsible for her dramatic loss of form that caused her to miss out on a medal at the  season-ending IAAF Continental Cup in Croatia on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Jamaican finished sixth in the women’s shot put after a relatively poor 16.96m throw and two fouls saw her failing to advance to the semi-final round.

The mark was a far cry from the national records of 19.22m to win the silver medal in March at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, England, and the 19.36m she uncorked to win the Commonwealth title in Australia in April.

She explained why following the end of the competition and her season on Sunday.

“It's been a very long season, started out with a bang but throughout I sustained two injuries that hindered me from progressing the way I wanted for the rest of the season,” she said in a post on Facebook. “I don't usually talk about my injuries because I don't want it to be an excuse for not performing well. Although I was injured, every competition I gave my best. I know next season will be even better and I am looking forward to it.”

She said she learned some important lessons from her experiences this season that will make her better prepared for the 2018/2019 season when she hopes to compete for a medal at the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar in September.

“This season has taught me so many things and I will work hard to improve and be stronger both mentally and physically,” she vowed. “My mantra ‘Everything happens for a reason even if you don't know what the reason is’.

She also thanked her mother, Traceyann Bendeson, husband Shane and coach Nathan Fangar for the support the provided during the course of what was a challenging season.
