Commonwealth 400 hurdles champs falters against US' Dalilah Muhammad

Commonwealth champion, Jamaica's Janieve Russell ran a fast 53.78 seconds at the Shanghai Diamond League on Saturday but was still bested by the slimmest of margins, the United States' Dalilah Muhammad laying claim to the honours.

In what could easily have been the race of the meet, Muhammad pulled out a season's best 53.77 to stay ahead of Russell by a mere one-hundredth of a second.

The two were by far and away the best of the field, as Canada's Sage Watson could only muster 55.23 for a distant third.

The other Caribbean athlete in the event, Russell's teammate, Leah Nugent was sixth in 56.54, behind South Africa's Wenda Nel, 55.63, and Poland's Joanna Linkiewicz, 55.84 seconds.

Russell pushed Muhammad to a season's best, while the US athlete can lay claim to pulling Russell to a lifetime best.
