Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls rebounded from a crushing last-second semi-final defeat at the hands of England to claim a bronze medal with a 60-55 win over New Zealand at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on Saturday.

The Jamaicans, who were registering a third straight win over the Kiwis, were faster out of the gates and enjoyed a 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and 29-27 advantage heading into halftime.  Led by goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid the Jamaicans ended the period with a strong 91 per cent accuracy with New Zealand shooting a lowly 68 per cent.

New Zealand, however, rallied fiercely to grab their first lead of the match three minutes into the third quarter, but the Jamaicans were up to the task and a solid defensive stand eventually saw the team pull away 46-39 with 15 minutes to play. Perhaps determined to end a miserable run of the form, the Silver Ferns again fought back to within four with 5:12 to play but the Jamaicans held their nerve to claim a third Commonwealth Games medal.

In the final England stunned favourites Australia to win their first Commonwealth Games gold medal.  Helen Housby scored in the final second to give England a 52-51 victory.
