Olympic and World 400-metre champion Kirani James is expected to be back in action by this summer.

The 2012 Olympic champion has been out of competition since April 2017 with what was believed to be a respiratory illness but has been back in training for some time.

President of the Grenada Athletics Association (GAA) Charlie George told SportsMax.TV that the super-talented quarter-miler will not be available for Grenada's team to the Commonwealth Games set for Australia's Gold Coast next month, but he certainly expects him to be back by later this year.

"Probably in around June," said George of when he expects the 25-year-old James to return to competition. "He is training, as far as I know, he is fully recovered."

At the 2017 Grenada Invitational on April 8, James was less than convincing while winning the 400 metres in 45.44s. He was upstaged by Bahamian Steve Gardiner, who won the ‘B’ race in a world-leading 44.26.

He was even less impressive at the Drake Relays later that month when he finished sixth in a pedestrian 46.21, after which news emerged that he was withdrawing from competition. He has not competed since that time.
