Humble Lion became the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention in the Jamaica Premier League after they crashed 2-1 to Dunbeholden FC in the second of three games at the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence earlier today.

The loss, their seventh of the season, meant that the Clarendon-based club remained at the bottom of the 11-team league on six points from nine games with only one game left. Meanwhile, it was a very good win for Dunbeholden as the three points see them jump five places into third spot on 13 points from eight games and are basically assured of a playoff spot.

Andrew Vanzie gave Humble Lion a lead in the 20th minute with a superb free-kick that gave goalkeeper Damion Hyatt no chance from 20 metres. It was Vanzie’s fifth goal of the season coming in a match that he started out playing as a centre-back before being moved farther forward as they hunted that elusive equalizing goal.

He is just one goal behind the competition’s leading marksman Oquassa Chong, who has six goals.

However, Mark Miller scored twice in a 10-minutes span to put Dunbeholden ahead for good.

He pulled Dunbeholden level in the 32nd minute when he latched onto a through ball from Dwayne Smith and slotted home. It was déjà vu for his second, as he once again latched onto Smith’s defence-splitting pass and fired home in the 42nd minute.

It was another disappointing display from Humble Lion that started well but once again their veteran players flattered to deceive.
