For the first time in nearly a decade, Montego Bay United are back in the semi-finals of the Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League, as they pulled off a tense but triumphant 1-1 stalemate with Tivoli Gardens and sealed a 3-1 aggregate victory at Sabina Park on Monday night.
Brian Brown’s 86th-minute strike gave the western giants a deserved lead before substitute Malik Cockings (90+3) netted a late consolation for Tivoli Gardens, who ended with nine players as the match was marked by drama and discipline issues, particularly for the West Kingston team.
But Montego Bay United, who came in with a 2-1 lead, held their nerves best to give their long-suffering fans reason to celebrate, as the team will be at home against Mount Pleasant FA in Thursday’s semi-final clash at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
Though pleased with the outcome, Montego Bay United's head coach Paul 'Tegat' Davis felt his team's performance was found wanting.
"We made it difficult. We are at a point in the season now where we have to be more clinical, more organised, and move the ball better as a team. I am happy that we didn't lose, but I felt we lacked discipline in our play; we gave away the ball easily when we could have kept the ball more, even when Tivoli went down to 10 men. So we have to work on that and prepare ourselves for Mount Pleasant," Davis said.
Montego Bay United began on the front foot and nearly opened the scoring inside two minutes when the lively Jourdaine Fletcher picked out Owayne Gordon, whose powerful right-footed effort forced a brilliant save from Tivoli’s Nicholas Clarke.
That was disappointingly the only real piece of action in the final third, as chances were at a premium. In fact, the rest of the first half was less eventful, as both teams struggled to find rhythm in a game plagued by frequent stoppages and fouls, and the score remained goalless at the break.
After the restart, Montego Bay United showed more purpose, and Fletcher again led the charge in the 76th minute with a dangerous run into the box, only to be bundled over by Barrington Pryce. A penalty was rightly awarded, but Fletcher's spot-kick was saved by Clarke, and the rebound attempt sailed over the bar — a missed opportunity that momentarily gave Tivoli a lifeline.
But that moment of elation turned to chaos as Clarke, in a burst of emotion, aggressively confronted referee Oshane Nation during the celebration and was promptly shown a straight red card. The meltdown continued minutes later when Lennox Russell, already on a booking, struck Montego Bay United's goalkeeper Davonnie Burton in the stomach and was shown a second yellow.
With Tivoli down to nine men, Montego Bay United turned the screw and broke the deadlock when Gordon’s surging run on the break created space for Brown, who calmly slotted past substitute goalkeeper Nathaniel Francis to all but seal the tie.
Montego Bay United pushed for a second as chances fell their way, especially as Tivoli’s depleted defence struggled to cope. Yet despite the pressure, the final blow never came.
Instead, Tivoli found a late glimmer of hope when Cockings pounced on a rebound after Burton parried Rodico Wellington’s shot in time added, but it was too little, too late.
Tivoli's head coach Jerome Waite felt his team's indiscipline proved costly as he also took a jab at the officials.
"The level of indiscipline cost us the game, but outside of that, the officiating...we need to see what can be done about these local referees; they really need to step up. It was a one-goal deficit, and the game was not out of our reach, but our lapse in concentration resulted in us giving them a goal, and we got one back. So it could have been better if we were more disciplined," Waite stated.
