In a move that has stunned fans and football enthusiasts across Jamaica, Montego Bay United (MBU) have parted ways with head coach Rodolfo Zapata, despite the club being well-positioned to challenge for the Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League (JPL) title.
The decision, which appears to be a mutual agreement between both parties, comes at a critical juncture in the season, with Montego Bay United sitting third in the standings on 45 points—behind league leaders Mount Pleasant (55 points) and Arnett Gardens (48 points).
Under Zapata’s leadership, the team has been in impressive form, winning 13 games, drawing six, and losing only four in their 23 outings so far.
While the reason for the sudden departure remains unclear, Zapata took to social media to express his gratitude to the club, his staff, and the fans who supported him throughout his tenure.
“Just to say thanks for the opportunity to lead Montego Bay United, and I am proud of the accomplishments we achieved together. I am leaving the team qualified for the next play-off, and I have no doubt that they will be candidates to win the Jamaica Premier League,” Zapata stated.
The Argentine tactician, who brought a distinct style and tactical versatility to MBU, highlighted the progress made under his leadership.
“We built a team that made us proud. We played with different formations, strategies, and tactics that gave us very good results and a DNA that distinguished us for an attractive style of football. Also, we achieved the improvement of some of our players, which was remarkable,” he added.
Zapata also made sure to acknowledge the support of Montego Bay United’s faithful.
“Thanks to our fans. Your support through the victories and challenges was very important. I appreciate each one of you who supported our team. I expect to approach playoffs with determination and teamwork. You know I’ll be watching. Wish you all the best and much success!”
With Montego Bay United now in the thick of the title race, all eyes will be on the club’s next move. Whether this shake-up will disrupt their momentum or inspire them to rally in the final stretch of the season remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that Zapata’s tenure will be remembered for the attacking philosophy and winning mentality he instilled in the team.
The club in a statement also acknowledged Zapata’s contributions.
“While we appreciate his dedication and contributions to the club and the Jamaica Premier League, we both feel that this decision is the best for the club at this time. Wishing him the best in his future endeavors,” the release read.
