Trinidad and Tobago's U-17 football team secured their first victory in the Concacaf World Cup qualifiers on Sunday, defeating the British Virgin Islands 3-1 at the Estadio Nacional in Costa Rica. The win propelled them to the top of Group B with four points from two matches, keeping their hopes alive for a spot at the 2025 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Qatar.
T&T started strongly, establishing a comfortable 3-0 lead by halftime. Josiah Kallicharan led the charge with a brace, scoring in the 6th and 27th minutes, while Caden Trestrail added another in the 22nd minute. Their dominance in the first half set the tone for a crucial victory.
Despite the British Virgin Islands pulling one back in the second half, T&T remained in control, ensuring they claimed all three points. The result was a much-needed boost for head coach Shawn Cooper's squad, who had been held to a 1-1 draw by Guyana in their opening match.
With only the group winner advancing to the U-17 World Cup, T&T’s young footballers know that every point counts. They will return to action on Thursday, February 13, when they face St. Maarten at 6:00 PM in another decisive encounter.
Currently leading Group B, T&T will be looking to maintain their momentum and secure a spot in the next phase of the tournament. Their attacking prowess and defensive stability will be key as they push forward in their qualification campaign.
