Kingston College’s Javon Buckridge scored the lone goal to crown the All-Star South Team as the penultimate champions of the second staging of the All-Star Football Competition, held at the Constant Spring Football Field on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
The All-Star South Team consisted of top players from the under-14 level, including school teams from Kingston College, St. George’s College, Wolmer’s Boys’ School, Excelsior High, and Holy Trinity High. Their opponents, the All-Star North Team, featured players from Jamaica College, Calabar, Hillel Academy, Campion College, St. Andrew Technical High School, St. Catherine High, and Eltham High.
“It was an exciting tournament,” Buckridge said. “Last year, the All-Star South Team were champions, and this year, we ensured that the coveted trophy stayed with us.”
Wolmer’s Boys’ School’s Jude Davis was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the All-Star South Team. “I feel good about my performance,” he said. “We did well, considering that we were all coming from different schools. We were able to connect well and showcase our individual talent.”
Coach of the All-Star South Team, Haron Martin, praised his players’ performance. “The team played with determination and confidence, and this resulted in a great performance from the players,” he said.
Meanwhile, the All-Star Preparatory and All-Star Primary competitions also provided thrilling action. This year, two matches were played, with the All-Star Preparatory team edging the All-Star Primary teams to take home the top titles.
Antawane Miller of Hydel netted two goals, with assists from his teammates, Lebron Durrant of Wolmer’s Preparatory, Daniel Blake of St. Peter and Paul Preparatory, and Dejuan Harley of Emanuel Christian Academy, to secure a 5-0 victory over the All-Star Primary Second Team.
Miller, who was also named MVP, expressed mixed emotions about the result. “I feel great, even though I did not fully execute my game plan. It was also an awesome feeling for me, as this is the first time I have played in the All-Star tournament,” he said.
Coach Michael-Lee Glenville emphasized teamwork during training. “We believed that what we did in training showed on the day. The camaraderie between the players came to the fore and resulted in a win for the team,” he said.
In the opening match of the tournament, the All-Star Preparatory First Team registered a 2-1 win over the All-Star Primary School team. The winning goals came from Cahvarie White of St. Peter and Paul Preparatory and Andrew Allen of Lannaman’s Preparatory, while Damarie Palmer of Balmagie Primary School scored the lone penalty goal for the All-Star Primary First Team.
Tyquon McDougall of Lannaman’s Preparatory took home the MVP trophy. “I feel great!” he exclaimed.
Coach Kemar Edwards praised his players’ performance. “The boys pulled themselves together and performed at their best. We just wanted them to have fun and showcase their talent,” he said.
Tournament Technical Director, Haron Martin, declared the tournament a success. “There has been an improvement in terms of turnout and the level of competition. You can see the passion that they played with and the outcomes. Next year, we will include rural area teams to diversify the competition on a broader scale,” he said.
