There was no hesitation, no second thought. The moment Karoy Anderson received the call to join the Reggae Boyz for the Concacaf Gold Cup, his response was as committed as the midfield performances that helped Charlton Athletic earn promotion to England’s Championship.
"Yeah, it was the same as every time. It's an honour, and I'm very grateful. It's a blessing to be able to represent my country. So yeah, it was a joyful moment," Anderson told JFF Media.
Anderson, 20, has been a quiet but consistent presence in the Reggae Boyz setup. So with Isaac Hayden ruled out due to stomach and respiratory issues, head coach Steve McClaren turned to the dependable and energetic Anderson to fill the void—his first Gold Cup summons and another milestone in a rapidly blossoming international career.
The Boyz, who lost 1-0 to Guatemala in their opening Group C contest, will have to win their next two contests against Guadeloupe on Friday and Panama next Tuesday to keep their hopes of progressing alive.
"It’s been good to be back with the squad. I enjoy being around everyone. Training was good; it was intense. I was just excited to get back training with the group ahead of the game,” Anderson said following his first training session with the team in the United States.
Anderson arrives at the Gold Cup on the heels of a breakout season with Charlton, where he played a pivotal role in their promotion campaign. His durability and growth as a box-to-box midfielder earned him praise not only at the club level but also within the Jamaica setup, where he has already featured in Copa America and Nations League action over the past two years.
"Yeah, I've really enjoyed it. It's been a dream to play at these tournaments, especially for Jamaica. These are the things that I used to speak with my brother about. So to be able to do it and to play in two years as well, it's been good. I just hope it continues," Anderson stated.
This camp is particularly special for Anderson, not only because of the tournament’s prestige but also because of familiar company with his Charlton teammates Tyreece Campbell and Kaheim Dixon also present.
“Yeah, it was a good season. I stayed fit, which was a blessing, and I was able to contribute a lot to the team’s success. To get promoted in just my second full season and now to be here with the national team again, it feels really good," Anderson shared.
"I think there's a lot of talent that our country has, and I was always talking to him [Campbell] to come and play because it is good to represent our roots and try and lift the country up and take it to places where it should be. And obviously to have Kaheim, so yeah, it's nice to all be together now," he added.
