'Outstanding' Le Normand will get Atletico chance, says Simeone

By Sports Desk December 14, 2024

Diego Simeone confirmed that defender Robin Le Normand will get more game time after missing Atletico Madrid's last two matches since returning from a brain injury.

Le Normand, who made the move from Real Sociedad to Atletico earlier this year, sustained the injury in a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid back in September.

The Spaniard made his return to competitive action during their Copa del Rey second round triumph over Cacereno earlier this month, but has not featured since.

Simeone's side face Getafe in LaLiga this Sunday, and the Atletico boss said that Le Normand will get his opportunity to shine in the weeks to come.

"Robin is an outstanding defender and there are team-mates who are competing at their best," Simeone told reporters.

"He is noble and works to have the opportunity to help. He will get his turn. We need everyone."

  • Arteta left frustrated after Pickford thwarts Arsenal Arteta left frustrated after Pickford thwarts Arsenal

Mikel Arteta was adamant Arsenal should have taken three points after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Everton at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta's side have drawn consecutive Premier League games for the first time since April 2023 and have now won only eight of their 16 league matches this season.

The Gunners dominated in terms of chances, accumulating an expected goals figure of 1.42 from 13 shots, but were frustrated by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and the Toffees' stubborn backline.

Arteta said: "It's very disappointing not to win the game. We fully deserved to win the game.

"We conceded no shots and we dominated play. When we generated big chances we didn’t score a goal.

"It doesn't matter [that Everton had 10 days to prepare]. Look at the intensity we generated in the second half.

"We dominated the game so much."

Pickford made five saves, with a superb, instinctive stop from Bukayo Saka's volley early in the second half a standout.

  • Van Nistelrooy calls on Leicester to learn quickly from mistakes Van Nistelrooy calls on Leicester to learn quickly from mistakes

Ruud van Nistelrooy wants Leicester City to take heed from their humbling 4-0 defeat at Newcastle United.

Three second-half goals - from Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy's second of the game - offered Leicester's new manager a brutal reminder of how ruthless the Premier League can be.

Van Nistelrooy had picked up four points from his opening two games at the helm, but his team were second-best from the start at St James' Park, where Leicester managed just one shot on target.

Despite the setback of a first loss, Van Nistelrooy is well aware of how quickly an opportunity to react can come about, as struggling Wolves head to the King Power Stadium next week.

But he knows the Foxes need to eradicate basic errors ahead of the crunch festive period.

"It was hard. It was 1-0 at half-time. We were a bit lucky not to be down by more. It's costly when you concede in such standard set-piece situations. Then it was going to be hard to turn it around from there," he said, as reported by BBC Sport.

"We know how intense Newcastle are and the way they play. A lot of the chances they created were from our ball losses, and they got moving quickly on the counter-attack. We kept going and trying, but we have to take this one on the chin and move on."

Van Nistelrooy's opposite number, Eddie Howe, labelled his side's performance as a clear improvement after the Magpies failed to win any of their previous four league games prior to Saturday's contest.

"It was a good performance. The first goal was important. It took a well-worked set play to set the ball rolling, and the second goal was important too, so we were able to express ourselves a little more," he said.

"We’re disappointed we haven’t been able to show that more this season. Today was one of our better performances."

Howe's cautious optimism was balanced against a rallying message from his captain Guimaraes - who finally ended his wait for a first goal of the season - and the Brazilian called on his team-mates to maintain their momentum ahead of a midweek EFL Cup quarter-final against Brentford.

"I think we stepped up in this game. It's a massive win. The team played well, especially in the second half," he added.

"I'm very happy to score again. I've been trying for a long, long time, but I wasn't lucky. We need to keep going as we have a massive game on Wednesday.

"We need to step up in all of our games, not just against the big six. Today was big proof this team can do big things together."

  • Augsburg 0-2 Bayer Leverkusen: Bundesliga champions close gap on leaders Bayern Augsburg 0-2 Bayer Leverkusen: Bundesliga champions close gap on leaders Bayern

Bayer Leverkusen climbed to second in the Bundesliga table following a routine 2-0 victory over Augsburg.

First-half goals from Martin Terrier and Florian Wirtz sealed the win for Xabi Alonso's side, who moved to within four points of leaders Bayern Munich.

Leverkusen had scored six Bundesliga goals in the opening quarter of an hour of matches this season and broke through in the 14th minute, when Terrier stabbed home the opener.

Wirtz's low drive doubled the lead five minutes before the break, and was enough to see the visitors over the line.

More importantly, after Bayern suffered their first loss of the Bundesliga season at Mainz, Leverkusen closed the gap on Vincent Kompany's side.

Data Debrief: Leverkusen set new club record

Leverkusen comfortably stretched their winning streak to seven matches across all competitions.

They also secured their 23rd Bundesliga victory of 2024, their most ever in a single calendar year.

Wirtz put the result beyond doubt, with the attacking midfielder now having been directly involved in a goal in each of his last five league appearances.
