Tuchel plans to offer White an England return

By Sports Desk December 14, 2024

Incoming England head coach Thomas Tuchel has revealed he will open the door to an international return for Ben White when he takes charge in 2025.

White has not featured for the Three Lions since prior to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which he left early after a reported falling out with coaching staff.

Previous boss Gareth Southgate announced in March that the Arsenal defender was continuing to rule himself out of selection but Tuchel plans to put that stance to the test.

Speaking after yesterday's FIFA World Cup qualifying draw, Tuchel said: "I will reach out to him, it should be a clean start and a clear narrative.

Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany had a clear message for his players following their shock 2-1 defeat away at Mainz, which was their first Bundesliga loss of the season.

Lee Jae-Sung struck twice either side of half-time, and despite Leroy Sane reducing the deficit late on, Bo Henriksen's side were able to hold on for a huge triumph.

Mainz have now won four of their last five Bundesliga home games against Bayern. Since the start of the 2020-21 campaign, no other side has won more against them.

It also marks Kompany's first league defeat since taking the reins at the Allianz Stadium, having only lost in the Champions League and DFB-Pokal in his debut season.

And Bayern struggled at the Mewa Arena, despite becoming the only team to score in all of their 14 Bundesliga games so far this season.

Kompany's side managed an expected goals (xG) total of 1.48 from their 13 efforts, though they had just one on target, which came from Sane's strike late on.

On the back of feeling frustrated at seeing his streak ended, Kompany insisted there was no time to dwell on the result, ahead of hosting RB Leipzig in their final game of 2024.

"We played against a team with a lot of life and spirit, they were prepared to fight for every moment," Kompany said post-game.

"From our side, there was not a lack of fighting. We did that to the best of our ability. Today we were just not at our best.

"This game, we can't play it any more, it's done. We'll use it to build a fire for next week. That's the only way to give an answer.

"We can't win this game in Mainz this year, but in the future, we're looking forward to it."

The clash with Leipzig is followed by a three-week break from league action, as the Bundesliga hits pause until mid-January.

Bayern are still top of the Bundesliga table, but saw their lead reduced to four points on Saturday after champions Bayer Leverkusen beat Augsburg 2-0.

  • Slot 'couldn't have asked for more' from 10-man Liverpool Slot 'couldn't have asked for more' from 10-man Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot conceded Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Fulham constitutes two points dropped but was proud of his side's efforts.

The Reds went behind to Andreas Pereira's early strike but were dealt a telling blow when Andy Robertson was sent off after just 17 minutes.

Having equalised through Cody Gakpo early in the second half, the hosts were then forced to come from behind again, Rodrigo Muniz scoring after 76 minutes and Diogo Jota equalising with four minutes to play.

Slot's side pushed hard for a winner but, having won 11 of their first 13 league games of the season, they have now drawn their last two.

The Liverpool manager told Sky Sports: "I don't think I could've asked for more from my players, especially after going down to 10 men.

"I couldn't have asked for more in terms of performance. Of course, we could have had two points more.

"We ended up with a draw and I don't think we can blame the referee for that. There were a few moments when I could have been given a yellow card.

"It's marginal moments and when some go against you, you think some will go for you but I haven't felt that here.

"We have to accept what VAR sees. I think Robbo might have been a bit too injured to keep going because normally he's faster than that, but it results in a red card."

  • Sunderland comeback stuns Swansea as Blades return to the summit Sunderland comeback stuns Swansea as Blades return to the summit

Sunderland came back from two goals down to beat in-form Swansea City 3-2 on the road on Saturday to keep within touching distance of the top two in the Championship.

Regis Le Bris' side found themselves 2-0 down inside 17 minutes at the Swansea.com Stadium, following goals from Zan Vipotnik and Liam Cullen.

But the Black Cats got back into the match on 28 minutes through Dan Ballard, who headed home from Trai Hume's free kick to score his first league goal since December 2023.

Dan Neil restored parity with a stunning strike from distance after being picked out by Jobe Bellingham, with the Sunderland midfielder rifling the ball home off the crossbar.

Bellingham then sealed the victory two minutes later, arriving late in the box to thump Chris Rigg's cutback beyond Lawrence Vigouroux for his third goal of the season.

The result saw Sunderland move up to third in the standings, while Swansea dropped to 10th in the division after suffering their first defeat in four Championship games.

Elsewhere, Sheffield United took top spot back in the second-tier following a 2-0 victory over lowly Plymouth Argyle at Bramall Lane, piling more pressure on head coach Wayne Rooney.

Goals from Gustavo Hamer and a late Kieffer Moore penalty secured a comfortable win for the league leaders, who lead Leeds by three points. Plymouth, meanwhile, are a point from safety after their fourth straight defeat.

Sheffield Wednesday got their play-off push back on track with a 3-1 victory over Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium, which was their third win in five matches.

Greg Leigh had got the hosts ahead in the first half, before Josh Windass equalised before half-time.

Jamal Lowe netted four minutes into the second half to put the Owls in front, before Djeidi Gassama volleyed in on 61 minutes to make things more comfortable for Danny Rohl's side.

Wednesday are ninth in the table, five points below sixth, while Oxford are 20th and just one point above the relegation zone.

Millwall were beaten 1-0 away to Middlesbrough in Neil Harris' final match as manager, having announced earlier this week that he would step away from his position.

Emmanuel Latte Lath got the only goal of the game after 10 minutes to seal a result that saw Michael Carrick's side go sixth. Millwall are 13th on 25 points after 20 matches, with the search for a new head coach already underway.
