Arteta: Sterling 'desperate to play' for Arsenal

By Sports Desk December 14, 2024

Mikel Arteta claimed it has been difficult for him to not give Raheem Sterling more game time at Arsenal, with the attacker "desperate to play".

Sterling joined Arsenal on loan from Chelsea late in the summer transfer window.

However, the 30-year-old has so far managed just four starts for the Gunners, featuring 10 times overall in all competitions.

He has scored one goal and provided two assists in 356 minutes of action in total, but Arteta, who worked with Sterling at Manchester City, wants to hand the forward more playing time.

"It's been tough and very difficult for me as well to accept that I haven't given him more [minutes]," Arteta told reporters.

Sterling has been subbed off in three of the four matches he has started, including after 37 minutes of October's Premier League defeat at Bournemouth when William Saliba was sent off.

"When he hasn't started the games, 90% of the subs that I make is related to saving minutes or because of injuries or avoiding injuries," Arteta added. "It's not tactical reasons."

"I would like him to play much more as I think he can impact the team in a very good way. He's very good in the dressing room and is absolutely desperate to play.

"He has had a very important role and suddenly you are in this position, not only here but when he was at Chelsea as well.

"I feel a lot of sympathy for players when they are in this moment and hopefully we can change it."

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil admitted Saturday's last-gasp defeat to Ipswich Town was tough to take, as the Tractor Boys piled further pressure on the under-fire head coach.

O'Neil's men thought they had at least earned themselves a point through Matheus Cunha's equaliser, which cancelled out Matt Doherty's own goal in the first half.

But Jack Taylor exposed Wolves' defensive woes once again as he popped up with a crucial header from a corner in the 94th minute, leaving O'Neil stunned after a second half mostly dominated by his team.

He told BBC Sport: “It is a big blow for the group. Especially with how we fought to get back into the game and be the better side for the second half.

“We were at maximum and felt like we would go on and win the game. To suffer that goal so late, the nature of the goal is crazy, which we have said already.”

Wolves have now lost four straight games and are four points adrift of Crystal Palace in 17th, with O’Neil admitting he is facing the biggest challenge of his managerial career as they fight for safety.

“I have worked at this level for three years and I have never had such a struggle to help the group cope with being at this level,” said O’Neil.

Wolves midfielder Tommy Doyle, who impressed from the substitutes' bench, admitted the last-minute goal had affected the players but vowed they would fight back.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Doyle said: “The dressing room is a difficult place to be at this moment in time.

“We have to be honest with each other and figure out why we aren't getting three points. Honest conversations need to happen.

"I want the fans to know that we will give 100 per cent every single day to try and put this right for them."

Their next match is a crucial trip away to Ruud Van Nistelrooy's Leicester City.

  • Arteta left frustrated after Pickford thwarts Arsenal Arteta left frustrated after Pickford thwarts Arsenal

Mikel Arteta was adamant Arsenal should have taken three points after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Everton at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta's side have drawn consecutive Premier League games for the first time since April 2023 and have now won only eight of their 16 league matches this season.

The Gunners dominated in terms of chances, accumulating an expected goals figure of 1.42 from 13 shots, but were frustrated by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and the Toffees' stubborn backline.

Arteta said: "It's very disappointing not to win the game. We fully deserved to win the game.

"We conceded no shots and we dominated play. When we generated big chances we didn’t score a goal.

"It doesn't matter [that Everton had 10 days to prepare]. Look at the intensity we generated in the second half.

"We dominated the game so much."

Pickford made five saves, with a superb, instinctive stop from Bukayo Saka's volley early in the second half a standout.

  • Van Nistelrooy calls on Leicester to learn quickly from mistakes Van Nistelrooy calls on Leicester to learn quickly from mistakes

Ruud van Nistelrooy wants Leicester City to take heed from their humbling 4-0 defeat at Newcastle United.

Three second-half goals - from Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy's second of the game - offered Leicester's new manager a brutal reminder of how ruthless the Premier League can be.

Van Nistelrooy had picked up four points from his opening two games at the helm, but his team were second-best from the start at St James' Park, where Leicester managed just one shot on target.

Despite the setback of a first loss, Van Nistelrooy is well aware of how quickly an opportunity to react can come about, as struggling Wolves head to the King Power Stadium next week.

But he knows the Foxes need to eradicate basic errors ahead of the crunch festive period.

"It was hard. It was 1-0 at half-time. We were a bit lucky not to be down by more. It's costly when you concede in such standard set-piece situations. Then it was going to be hard to turn it around from there," he said, as reported by BBC Sport.

"We know how intense Newcastle are and the way they play. A lot of the chances they created were from our ball losses, and they got moving quickly on the counter-attack. We kept going and trying, but we have to take this one on the chin and move on."

Van Nistelrooy's opposite number, Eddie Howe, labelled his side's performance as a clear improvement after the Magpies failed to win any of their previous four league games prior to Saturday's contest.

"It was a good performance. The first goal was important. It took a well-worked set play to set the ball rolling, and the second goal was important too, so we were able to express ourselves a little more," he said.

"We’re disappointed we haven’t been able to show that more this season. Today was one of our better performances."

Howe's cautious optimism was balanced against a rallying message from his captain Guimaraes - who finally ended his wait for a first goal of the season - and the Brazilian called on his team-mates to maintain their momentum ahead of a midweek EFL Cup quarter-final against Brentford.

"I think we stepped up in this game. It's a massive win. The team played well, especially in the second half," he added.

"I'm very happy to score again. I've been trying for a long, long time, but I wasn't lucky. We need to keep going as we have a massive game on Wednesday.

"We need to step up in all of our games, not just against the big six. Today was big proof this team can do big things together."
