Clayton twins, Kevona Davis impress as Edwin Allen's girls win Central Champs

The girls all produced record runs as Edwin Allen scored 375.50 points to hold off a stern challenge from Hydel High (336.5) and St. Jago (325).

Holmwood Technical (273) and Vere Technical (124) rounded out the top-five girls' schools at the championships.

Davis was among several athletes who set meet records when she stormed to a convincing victory in the Girls’ 16-18 200m in 23.30 seconds.

She finished almost a second ahead of Holmwood Technical’s Kishawna Wallace who claimed the silver medal in 24.24s while Kayla Bonnick St Jago High was third in 24.36s.

In the Girls 15-16, Tina Clayton also secured an impressive win in 23.57s, well ahead of Shenese Walker of Hydel who crossed the line in 24.04 and Dejeana Oakley of Clarendon who was third but credited with the same time as Walker.

Quaycian Davis of St Jago also established a new championship record in the 400m when she won in 53.59s. Alliah Baker of Hydel took the silver medal in 53.65 while Anne-Lie Waite of Spaldings High won the bronze medal in 55.41.

A new championship record was also set in the Girls 15-16 400m when Oneika McAnnuff of Hydel High raced across the line in 53.40s. Holmwood Technical’s Rickiann Russell was second on 54.18 and Edwin Allen’s Kacian Powell was third in 55-flat.

Kavia Francis of Holmwood Technical was not able to establish a new record in the Girls 16-18 event but still won in impressive fashion taking the event in 53.38s. She was more than 0.5 clear of silver-medalist Garriel White of Hydel High who was timed in 54.04s with Daniella Deer of Holmwood winning the bronze in 54.08.

One of the most impressive performances of the day came from Tia Clayton, the other half of the Clayton twins, who was astonishingly quick in the Girls 15-16 100m, which she won in 11.29s.

The depth of the sprinting talent was on full display as Brandy Hall won the silver was also fast in claiming the silver medal in 11.38s. Shashieka Steele of Holmwood Technical was third in 11.50.

All three girls were quicker than those in the 16-18 100m that was won by St. Jago’s Kayla Bonnick in 11.60. Shakeira Bowra of St Catherine was the silver medallist in 11.62 while Vere Technical’s Atena Rayson was third in a pedestrian 11.79.

Edwin Allen’s 15-16 Girls unleashed a stunning display of speed in the 4x100m relay scorching the track on their way to a 43.80s clocking that shattered the record of 45.02 set by St. Jago High in 2019.

Hydel was a distant second in 45.25 with Holmwood securing their spot on the podium with a third-place finish in 45.42.

Meanwhile, St. Jago took the 16-18 Girls title in 45.50s over St. Jago 46.41 and Edwin Allen 46.51.

Hydel won the Girls 13-14 relay in 45.34. Hydel was second in 46.88 and Holmwood Technical third in 47.14.

Holmwood would get the chance to cover themselves with some glory when they won the 4x400m relay in 3:39.45. Edwin Allen  (3:41.11)  had to settle for the silver medal. St. Jago (3:44.23) was third.

Edwin Allen, St. Jago leaders after day one of 2025 Central Athletics Championships at GC Foster College

St. Jago High and Edwin Allen High were the respective Boys and Girls leaders as action ended on day one of the 2025 Central Athletics Championships at the GC Foster College in St. Catherine, Jamaica. St. Jago lead the Boys standings with 131 points at the completion of 18 out of 40 events. 15 points behind them in second are Edwin Allen while Clarendon College are third with 71. On the Girls side, Edwin Allen have a comfortable lead with 163 points after 18 of 45 events. 38 points adrift of the Clarendon-based school are Holmwood Technical while Hydel High are third with 105 points.

Edwin Allen's Christopher Young sets new shot put mark as field event records tumble on Day 2 of Central Champs

Young threw 18.77m to shatter the previous record of 18.34m set by fellow alumni Demar Gayle in 2015.

It was an Edwin Allen 1-2 in the event as Trevor Gunzell also surpassed the previous record with his own mark of 18.71m in the close battle between teammates. Brandon Gayle of St Jago High threw 17.85m for third.

In the Javelin Open for Girls, Natalie Albert threw 39.71m to take victory over teammate G’Nea Pitt (39.0m).

Edwin Allen’s Shenelia Williams took the bronze medal with her best effort of 36.06m.

Another meet record was established in the Class III Girls High Jump where Edwin Allen’s Asia McKay soared to a new mark of 1.70m, eclipsing the mark of 1.68m set by Vere Technical’s Anishka McDonald in 2019.

Sabrina Atkinson of Hydel copped the silver with her clearance of 1.65m. Third went to Jahmeka Brown, who cleared 1.60m.

The Class I long jump title now belongs to Edwin Allen’s Serena Cole. The sprinter/long jumper produced a leap of 5.92m to secure victory over St Jago High School’s Kay-Lagay Clarke (5.84m).

St Jago picked up valuable points as Machaeda Linton leapt 5.62m for third.

St Jago picked up another win in the Class 3 High Jump for Boys as Patrick Brown equalled the record of 1.65m shared by Shane York of St Jago High and Christoff Madden of Mt St Joseph.

After 28 finals St Jago is the runaway leader among the boys with 295.5 points. Edwin Allen is second with 103 points while Clarendon College and St Catherine High are third tied with 75 points.

Manchester High with 60 points makes up the top five teams.

After 29 finals, Edwin Allen leads the girls’ standings with 246.2 points. Hydel lie second with 181.6 points. St Jago High 166.6, Holmwood  Technical 147 and St Catherine High 135 round out the top five.

Kerrica Hill shines for Hydel but Edwin Allen's girls victorious at Central Champs

Hill ran 13.21 to win gold in the Class II 100m hurdles and eclipse Oneka Wilson’s 13.39 set in 2020. Hill’s Hydel teammate Shania Myers copped the silver medal running 13.69 to edge St. Catherine High’s Asharria Ulett, who clocked 13.70 for third.

Hill’s second gold medal was won the Class II 200m in which she ran 23.57 into a headwind of -1.7m/s, which perhaps denied her the chance to challenge Kevona Davis’s record of 23.24 set in 2019. Like in the hurdles, it was another Hydel athlete who finished in the runner-up spot, Alliah Baker clocking 24.33.

Quana Walker of St. Jago High won the bronze medal running 24.92.

Oneka Wilson won the Class I hurdles in 14.00 over Janela Spencer of Manchester High, who ran 14.18. St Jago’s Kay-Lagay Clarke was third 14.38.

Edwin Allen, however, continued to score valuable points on their way to the title. The school from Frankfield in Clarendon enjoyed a 1-2 finish in the Class I Girls 200m as Brandy Hall running into a headwind of -1.2m/s sped to victory in 24.07 ahead of teammate Bethany Bridge, who was not far behind in 24.14.

Hydel did get a podium finish as Daena Dyer was third in 24.18.

The Class III race went to Shemonique Hazle of Hydel who ran 24.63. Holmwood Technical’s Abrina Wright (24.72) was a close second while Michaelann Lindo of St Catherine High finished third in 25.03.

The girls battled against a stiff headwind of -3.1 m/s.

Sashana Johnson of Hydel won the Class IV title in 25.69 over St Jago’s Adora Campbell (25.84) and St Catherine High’s Ackeelah White (26.06).

At the conclusion of the two days of competition, Edwin Allen scored 375.20 points. Hydel scored 305.6 while St Jago accumulated 274.60 points. Holmwood Technical 220 and St Catherine High 197.50 rounded out the top five schools.

Levell wins 200m, St. Jago boys triumph at Central Champs

20.71 was enough for Levell to cruise comfortably home ahead of St. Catherine High’s Sandrey Davison (21.30) and Manchester’s Shemar Palmer (21.37).

Steer Town’s Omarion Barrett completed an impressive sprint double by winning the Class Two Boys 200m in 21.81 ahead of Edwin Allen’s Antonio Powell (21.99) and Clarendon College’s Tremaine Hamilton (22.44).

Ajae Brown of Ferncourt High ran 23.29 to win the Class Three Boys 200m ahead of the St. Jago pair of Detarje Morgan (23.30) and 100m champion and record holder Ray J Reece (23.33).

Manchester High ran 3:17.41 to win the Boys 4x400m ahead of St. Jago (3:18.32) and St. Catherine High (3:19.82) while in the Girls section, Holmwood Technical and Edwin Allen were separated by one-hundredth of a second with Holmwood taking the win in 3:41.81 ahead of Edwin Allen (3:41.82). St. Catherine High were third in 3:46.48.

Edwin Allen and Holmwood swapped places in the Girls Sprint Medley with Edwin Allen running 4:00.52 to win ahead of Holmwood (4:13.50) and Dinthill Technical (4:19.88).

St. Jago were equally dominant in the Boys section running 3:39.98 to win ahead of Clarendon College (3:53.10) and Bustamante High (3:58.75)

The Monk Street-based St. Jago ended up comfortably winning the Boys team title, finishing with 404.50 points. Edwin Allen finished a distant second 175 points, while the top five was rounded out by Clarendon College (120), St. Catherine High (98), and Manchester High (83).

Lyston runs sizzling 11.14 at Central Champs

Despite only running in the heats of the Girls Class One 100m, Lyston stole the show with a spectacular 11.14, a personal best and world-leading time.

The former St. Jago athlete didn’t turn up for the final, which was won by Edwin Allen’s Tina Clayton in 11.26 ahead of her sister Tia who ran 11.37 for second. Janela Spencer of Manchester High was third in 11.79.

Lyston’s Hydel teammate Alana Reid won the Girls Class Two event in 11.37, while Edwin Allen’s Theianna-Lee Terrelonge won the Class Three event in 11.88.

St. Jago’s Odaine Crooks was in record-breaking form in the Boys Class One 100m, running 10.46 to win. Steer Town's Omarion Barrett ran 10.83 to win the Class Two event, while St. Jago's Ray J Reece won the Class Three event in 11.31 after running a new record 11.29 in the preliminaries.
