STETHS retain Western Champs titles

St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) secured both the girls' and boys' titles at the County of Cornwall Athletics Association (COCAA) Western Championships, which concluded on Saturday at the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport.

After trailing following Wednesday’s first day at their home ground, St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex, STETHS won the boys’ championship by 30 points – 46 points fewer than last year – to secure their 11th consecutive title.

STETHS, who claimed victory in 11 of the 49 finals, amassed 333.5 points – five points fewer than last year – to top the standings. William Knibb Memorial High School, winners of five finals, finished second with 305.5 points. Munro College, who led after the first day, placed third with 270.5 points, followed by Cornwall College with 220 points and Herbert Morrison Technical High School with 205 points.

The girls' team, which led from the opening day, scored 358 points to win by 104 points, though slightly down from their 364.17 points last year. STETHS secured 15 victories from the 44 finals, including five one-two finishes. Mount Alvernia High School secured the runners-up spot with 254 points, holding onto their position from last year. William Knibb Memorial High School finished third with 186 points, followed by Petersfield High School with 125 points. Maggotty High School rounded off the top five with 90 points.

STETHS girls capped their triumph with four relay wins, earning 58 points from the six relay events. The Santa Cruz-based STETHS set a personal best time of 4:34.26 to win the Girls’ Sprint Medley Relay, finishing ahead of B.B. Coke High School (4:41.15) and Maggotty High School (4:52.89). Additional victories came in the Class Three 4x100m relay (49.32), Class Four 4x100m relay (50.25), and the 4x400m relay open (3:46.23).

Mount Alvernia High School won the other two relays, including a personal best 50.74 in the Girls' Class One 4x100m relay, edging STETHS (50.77) and Petersfield High School (51.24). They also claimed the Class Two 4x100m relay in 51.08, finishing ahead of Rhodes Hall High School (53.20) and Petersfield High School (53.77).

Several athletes claimed double titles during the two days of competition.

In the boys’ championships, Trevoy Smith of Herbert Morrison Technical and DeJaun Gray of STETHS were among the standout double winners.

Smith, 18, set a world Under-20 leading time and personal best of 50.82 seconds to comfortably win the Class One 400m hurdles, improving on his previous best of 50.92 set on June 28, 2024. Shavoy Thompson of Muschett High School placed second in 52.54 seconds, with Joshua Wint of William Knibb Memorial High third in 53.63 seconds – both personal bests.

Earlier, Smith clocked 14.06 seconds to win the Class One 100m hurdles. Reynaldo Johnson of STETHS finished second in 14.82 seconds, while Shamare Hutchinson of William Knibb Memorial High was third in 15.19 seconds, both also setting personal bests.

Gray completed the Boys’ Class Three 800m and 1500m double. He claimed a comfortable win in the 1500m on Wednesday with a time of 4:46.98 and returned on Saturday to set a personal best of 2:06.96 in the 800m.

Other notable performances among the boys included Zachary Wallace of Maggotty High School, who won the Boys' 100m in 10.61 seconds, ahead of Herbert Morrison Technical’s Tavaine Stewart (10.79) and Munro College’s Mickoy Curtis (10.89).  Usain Bernard of Petersfield High won the Boys' Class Two 100m in 11.29, beating William Knibb’s Sebastine Ellis (11.29) and STETHS' Ajannie Kelly (11.33). Herbert Morrison Technical’s Jahvados Samuels won the Class Three 100m in 12.03, while teammate Klaysis Beckford claimed Class Four honours with a time of 12.32.

Sabrina Dockery of Lacovia High, Shanoya Douglas of Muschett High, and Dervena Williams of Mount Alvernia High were among the double winners in the girls' championship, each claiming sprint doubles in their respective classes.

Dockery, 18, dominated the Girls' Class One 200m with a time of 24.25 seconds. Rihanna Allen of STETHS secured second place with a personal best of 24.74 seconds, while Brenea Grizzle of Green Island finished third in 26.12 seconds. Dockery later claimed the Class One 100m in 11.49 seconds, the only sub-12 second performance of the event, defeating Grizzle (12.73) and Samaritan McEnuff of Petersfield (12.98).

Douglas, who secured a 200m bronze at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, last August, showed her class with a dominant victory in the Girls’ Class Two 200m, clocking 23.31 seconds.

She finished well ahead of Mount Alvernia High’s Sharla Bell, who ran 25.62 seconds, and Lacovia High’s Tishauna McDowell, who crossed the line in 26.20 seconds.

Douglas continued her impressive performance in the 100m, winning the event in 11.53 seconds. She was comfortably ahead of Ronique Stewart from Rusea’s High, who took second in 12.31 seconds. Douglas’ teammate, Mickelia Henlon, finished in third place with a time of 12.48 seconds.

Williams set a personal best of 26.26 seconds to win the Girls' Class Four 200m, finishing ahead of Muschett High’s Odeisha Headley (26.76) and Keliese Dyer, who recorded a personal best of 26.88. Williams then secured victory in the 200m with a time of 12.80 seconds, narrowly edging out Deana Ellis of Lacovia High and Dyer, who both clocked 12.82 seconds. All three set personal bests in the event.

Daynea Colstock of Green Island High, a back-to-back Western Relays 400m hurdles champion, claimed the Girls' Class One 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles Open double.

Colstock posted a personal best of 1:00.57 minutes to win the 400m hurdles, defeating Rhianna Lewis of Rhodes Hall, who finished second in 1:00.63, and Jeneil Harding of Lacovia High, who placed third in 1:07.19.

Colstock returned to win the 100m hurdles in 14.94 seconds, ahead of Martinea Senior of STETHS, who clocked a personal best of 17.34 seconds for second, and Cheryce Boyd of William Knibb, who finished third in a personal best of 17.90 seconds.

The second regional meet, the Central Athletics Championships, is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at GC Foster College.
