Najhada Seymoure of Excelsior High delivered a golden performance to lead a dominant Jamaican sweep of the podium in the High School Girls Discus Throw Championship on day two of the 129th Penn Relays at Franklin Field on Friday.
Seymoure, the reigning ISSA Champs Class One champion, launched the disc 51.01m to claim the top spot and improve on her runner-up finish from last year. Her winning throw also ensured Jamaica’s continued dominance in the event, with local athletes now having claimed victory 12 of the last 14 times the championship has been contested.
Though she led early, Seymoure was briefly overtaken by Abler Mills of St Catherine High, who threw 50.09m, before reclaiming her lead in the fourth round. Jamelia Young of Clarendon College rounded out the podium with a best effort of 47.54m, while Abigail Bennett of Merl Grove High placed fourth with 46.99m.
Meanwhile, other strong Jamaican showings saw Vere Technical's Ramona Freemantle place sixth with 45.82m and Immaculate Conception's Jada Francis (45.44m) in eighth.
Meanwhile, in the High School Girls Shot Put Championship, Annae Mackey of Queen’s College, Bahamas, snatched the silver medal with a 14.60m heave on her final attempt, edging out Jamaica’s Kimeka Smith of Excelsior High, who had thrown 14.53m on her fifth attempt.
The event was won for a second straight year by Jessica Oji of Livingston, New Jersey, who saved her best for last—throwing 15.96m on her final attempt, the third-best mark in Penn Relays history. Her opening round effort of 15.53m would also have secured the title.
Smith’s Excelsior teammate Gianna Clayton finished seventh with 13.11m. Marla Kay Lampart, Carifta Under-20 record holder from Clarendon College, was unable to advance beyond the first round with a best of 12.16m.
