Jamaica’s Amani Phillips secured his second gold medal at the 52nd CARIFTA Games in Port of Spain with gold in the Under-17 Boys Long Jump during the morning session at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Monday.
Phillips’ winning jump of 7.49m, a new personal best, came in the sixth and final round after he was overtaken a few minutes before by teammate Michael Graham who jumped a personal best of 7.33m for silver.
Phillips led from rounds one to five courtesy of his 7.28m effort in round three before Graham, the U17 100m champion who was fourth heading into the final round, produced the first 7m jump of his career to take the lead.
Phillips, who also had a 7.26m jump in round one and a 7.08 jump in round five, held his nerve to produce a personal best to add to his record-setting performance in the Triple Jump on Saturday.
Trinidad & Tobago’s Michal Paul was third with a best effort of 7.03m.
