Jamaican high jumper Roschell Clayton delivered another historic performance at the Big East Championships on Saturday, securing her fourth career high jump gold medal and earning the title of Most Outstanding Field Performer of the meet.
Competing in her final Big East Indoor Championships, Clayton cleared 1.82m to clinch victory for Villanova University, cementing her status as one of the program’s greatest-ever jumpers. Her latest triumph makes her the Wildcats' all-time leader in high jump gold medals, further adding to a decorated collegiate career.
Her dominance was recognized by Big East head coaches, who unanimously voted her as the Outstanding Field Performer, an award given to the most exceptional field event athlete at the championships. Clayton becomes just the fourth Villanova athlete ever to receive this prestigious honour and the third to do so indoors.
Clayton was pushed by fellow Jamaican and Villanova teammate Malaika Cunningham, who finished as runner-up in the event. The sophomore cleared 1.76m on her first attempt, maintaining a perfect 4-for-4 record on the day. However, she was unable to clear 1.82m, which would have been a five-centimetre personal best.
With only Clayton and Cunningham left in the competition, the bar was eventually raised to 1.86m, but Clayton failed to clear it on her three attempts after securing victory. Taylor Woodeshick, Villanova’s third competitor, finished sixth, making it a strong overall performance for the Wildcats.
Clayton’s legacy at Villanova is firmly cemented, as she holds the school’s all-time records in the high jump for both indoor and outdoor seasons. Last year, she also became the first Villanova jumper to win the championship section of a women's event at the prestigious Penn Relays, showcasing her ability to perform on the biggest collegiate stages.
As she closes out her time at Villanova, Clayton’s Big East Championships dominance, combined with her school records, has solidified her as one of Jamaica’s brightest collegiate high jump prospects. Her next challenge will be transitioning to the elite senior ranks, where she hopes to continue making strides on the international stage.
