Jamaican Olympic 100m silver medallist Kishane Thompson opened his season last Saturday with a second-placed finish in the Men’s 100m at the Shanghai Diamond League.

The 23-year-old produced a time of 9.99 to finish just behind South African Akani Simbine who won in a time of 9.98, adding to his 9.99 to win this season’s Diamond League opener in Xiamen a week prior.

For Thompson, this was his first 100m race since last year’s Olympic final where he produced 9.79 to take silver behind American Noah Lyles.

“I’m really excited just to get the cobwebs out,” Thompson told The Inside Lane after Saturday’s race.

Despite finishing second, Thompson didn’t look at the result as a loss, noting his excitement at knowing exactly where he went wring and what he needs to work on.

“I see where I have to work on and it gives me excitement to know, when I put it together, there’s so much more in store,” he said.

At this time in the last two seasons, Thompson was injured and unable to compete so he has a lot of appreciation for the opportunities to just race.

“I’m really a simple guy. Just to go out there and perform gives me joy,” he said.

“The last two seasons, at this time, I was injured so, honestly, I’m just grateful and enjoying myself and knowing that I have a lot to work on. I made my mistakes in the race but we’re just going to learn from them,” he added.

The MVP Track Club star is looking to follow up a breakout 2024 season that, in addition to his Olympic silver, saw him claim his maiden Jamaican National 100m title with personal best 9.77 in June.

He arrived at those national championships without finishing a race up to that point during the season.

It will be interesting to see what he can produce in 2025 with a few races under his belt.
