Right-arm pace bowler Cheryl-Ann Fraser has been selected to replace Shamilia Connell in the 13-player squad for the third and final CG United One Day International (ODI) against New Zealand Women to be played on Sunday, September 25, at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

Newly appointed Jamaica Reggae Boyz head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson is hoping to conduct a valuable assessment during the team’s upcoming friendly international against Argentina.

The Reggae Boyz and the Albiceleste, led by football superstar Lionel Messi, will lock horns at the Red Bulls Stadium in New York, on Tuesday, for the fourth time in history.  Hallgrímsson, who officially took charge of the team last week, admits the former world champions are a difficult prospect to face on his debut but hopes to gleam some valuable insights.

“It going to be a good contest and at least we’ll know where we stand and what we need to improve," Hallgrímsson said.

“For me, it’s a time to learn, a time to observe, time to evaluate.  Then after this camp, we can see what we need to change if we need to change anything.  Find out what is working and what is not working.”

In three matches Jamaica has not managed to secure a result against Argentina losing all three matches that the teams have played.

Waterhouse defender Ricardo Thomas has been drafted in to replace injured Ipswich Town defender Greg Leigh ahead of Jamaica’s friendly international against Argentina.

Leigh was expected to join up with the rest of the team in the United States on Friday but suffered an injury in the team’s 2-2 draw against Sheffield Wednesday earlier this week.  Initially, the defender was thought to have just suffered a bruise to the area but subsequent scans revealed a compression fracture.

The injury is now expected to keep the player out of action for an extended spell.

“He, unfortunately, picked something up at the back end of the Sheffield Wednesday game, which was initially thought to be bone bruising,” the team’s manager Kieran McKenna said.

“At that point, it was touch-and-go whether he was going to go away for international duty.

 “He’s had some scans this week, just to make sure, and unfortunately he has a compression fracture of his leg and will be out for a longer period of time. That’s a disappointing one for Greg and for us as well," he added.

The 29-year-old has made 8 appearances for the Jamaica national team and last played against Honduras in March.  Thomas has played 10 matches for the national team and was last on the bench in the team’s Nation’s League match against Mexico in June.

Legendary West Indies fast bowler Sir Andy Roberts believes not having a settled team could make things difficult for the team in the upcoming T20 World Cup qualifiers.

In order to officially book a spot in Australia next month, the two-time champions must advance from a play-off group that will also feature Ireland, Scotland, and Zimbabwe.  The team will start as heavy favourites to advance from the group but the squad will feature several players that have not been in the squad for the last few months and even some who have never played the format internationally.

Since a disastrous campaign at the 2021 World Cup, the Windies have played 22 matches, but a few of the players added to the squad have not played in the majority of them over the past year.  For instance, Evin Lewis has not played since the last tournament, Johnson Charles has not played for the team since 2016, Sheldon Cottrell has played sparingly since the start of the year, and Yannic Cariah and Raymond Reifer are yet to play in the format.

Having played so many matches Roberts believes the team should have been already been using a settled squad ahead of the tournament.

“We don’t have a settled team and that is the biggest problem.  You don’t know what your teammate is capable of doing because he has just come into the team,” Roberts told the Mason and Guest Radio program.

“When West Indies was at its best, we had a settled team for five, ten years.  If you check out Australia, Australia has a settled team, and Pakistan has a settled team.  India is fiddling around with the team and just look at the issues they have been having.  You need settled teams,” he added.

“We are going with a number of new players, new to the international scene.  We knew for a long time that the World Cup was going to be this year, so we should have been trying our best to make sure we have a unit that is ready to go from ball one.”

The threat of heavy rain in Jamaica over the upcoming weekend has caused the postponement of rounds six and seven of the ongoing Jamaica T20 Bashment.

CEO of the Jamaica Cricket Association, Courtney Francis, issued a memo to all teams notifying them of the postponement on Thursday of the matches that were scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

“In light of the information from the Met Office of Jamaica, the JCA T20 Bashment matches originally scheduled for this weekend of September 24 & 25, 2022 are rescheduled for the following weekend of October 1 & 2, 2022. The fixtures will be adjusted by one week to accommodate the remainder of the competition. Best if we err on the side of caution,” Francis said.

“The JCA is impressing upon each individual to listen and watch for weather updates and advisories. Getting up to date information is an important part of you and your loved ones staying safe during what may be a challenging few days ahead,” he added.

Rounds six and seven are the last games of the preliminary round and will determine who advances to the quarterfinals.

Titans Track Club coach and former Olympian Michael Frater is confident his new charge Briana Williams will be able to make the transition from star junior to successful senior, despite admitting that it has been difficult for former junior stars in the past.

The 20-year-old Williams recently announced the decision to part ways with long-time coach Ato Boldon and join Frater and Gregory Little at Titans.  As a junior, Williams was a world champion in both the 100m and 200m.  Since turning pro in 2020, however, the athlete has failed to engineer anything close to similar success at the senior level.

Williams has made both the Olympics and World Championship teams, going on to win 4x100m relay gold, but has only managed to secure a spot in the relay pool to date and missed out on individual appearances.  At the Jamaica national trials, earlier this year, her time of 10.94, a new personal best, was only good enough for fourth spot.

In track and field, it isn’t uncommon for junior stars to fail to make the grade at the senior level but Frater believes Williams has the mindset to join the likes of Usain Bolt and Veronica Campbell-Brown as world juniors champions who went on to excel at the senior level.

“It’s hard for a lot of these athletes that do great things at young ages, a lot of them never surpass what they do,” Frater told the SportsMax Zone.

“That's why most people will tell you that they prefer athletes who weren’t teeing off at a young age,” he added.

“I think with Briana’s attitude and dedication, though, it won’t be a problem for her transitioning to the next level, and as coach Ato said he may not have been able to spend enough time with her.  For an athlete to be a world-class athlete she has to get the full attention that she needs.”

Guyana Amazon Warriors made it two from two in their home leg of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a thrilling run chase to defeat the Saint Lucia Kings on Thursday night.

The Kings won the toss and opted to bat first, and their captain Faf Du Plessis showed why with a magnificent century to lead the way.

His 103 came off 59 balls to help his side set the highest team total in the Hero CPL this year. An outstanding 194-5 looked like an unshakeable target but the Amazon Warriors had other ideas.

Rahmunullah Gurbaz and Chandrapaul Hemraj got the Amazon Warriors' reply off to a fantastic start reaching 71 runs at the end of the PowerPlay and that enabled the Warriors to always be in the hunt for victory. Despite a flurry of wickets after the PowerPlay, Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer paced the chase superbly and the Warriors were able to get home with four balls to spare. 

Earlier the Kings had shown what a good wicket it was, teeing off from ball one to reach 100 runs in 10 overs. Du Plessis was faultless in his stroke play targeting all corners of the ground and brought up his century in the 17^th over of the match.

Late runs from Roston Chase helped the Kings set the Warriors 195 to win but if the chase seemed insurmountable the Warriors made light of it in front of a fever-pitch Providence crowd.

 Gurbaz set the tone in the PowerPlay blasting 52 off 26 balls and this laid the platform for Hope and Hetmyer to pace the remainder of the chase appropriately. When Hetmyer fell for 36, Hope simply took up the mantle leading the Warriors home with a superb half-century.

 His 59 runs came off 30 balls as he made it back-to-back fifties in the Hero CPL and consecutive wins for the Amazon Warriors.

West Indies Women suffered a 2-wicket defeat in the 2nd CG United One Day International against New Zealand Women at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Thursday.

Winning the toss and batting first, the West Indies Women posted 169/9 from their 50 overs. Skipper Hayley Matthews top-scored with an 82-ball 46 followed by another commendable performance with the bat from Chinelle Henry with 30.

Debutant Eden Carson finished with figures of 3-31 from her eight overs.

In reply, New Zealand nervously got to their target for the loss of 8 wickets in 40.1 overs, with Hayley Jensen smashing a boundary for the winnings runs.

Maddy Green top-scored with 48 while Lauren Down added 33 against Karishma Ramharack’s career-best figures of 3-22 from six overs.

Both teams meet on Sunday September 25 for the 3rd CG United ODI at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. First ball is 9:30am Eastern Caribbean/8:30am Jamaica time.

Jamaica defender Curtis Tilt admits to being excited by the prospect of facing legendary Argentinian Lionel Messi and the rest of a start-studded South American squad, ahead of the team’s clash in New York next week.

The 31-year-old was a late addition to the team that will face the Argentineans on Tuesday.  The defender has not represented the team since June of last year against Serbia but will hope to make his case under new Jamaica coach Heimir Hallgrímsson.  Tilt, who plays for English Championship team Wigan Athletic, is enjoying a whirlwind year having secured promotion from League One with the team at the start of the season.

Now he is excited at the prospect of not just returning to the country’s line-up, but also facing one of the best players in history and added to that a first-time trip to the Big Apple.

  "I'm buzzing to be fair, not only to be selected for my country but playing against the best player in the world really," Tilt told Wigan Today.

"I was called up late, so I've not had much to process it yet. I'm sure I'll get more anxious nearer the time, wondering what it's like to play against the very best,” he added.

"But New York as well...I've never actually been, I was thinking of going out during the winter break.

"It's come a little bit early, so hopefully we'll get a chance to have a look round at some of the sights."

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots secured a seven-run win over the Trinbago Knight Riders to stay in contention for a 2022 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) play-off spot on Thursday.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots won the toss and chose to bat in this must-win game, but were restricted early on as the Knight Riders rotated five bowlers across the powerplay. Sherfane Rutherford would change the complexion of the innings with a brilliant 78 runs, aided by a spectacular cameo from Dewald Brevis, to take the Patriots to 163-6. 

In their chase, the Trinbago Knight Riders struggled to build partnerships as wickets consistently fell. Despite this, they remained with a chance of winning the match as Tim Seifert and Andre Russell scored crucial late runs, but it proved to be in vain as they could only muster 156-7, losing by seven runs. 

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots were frustrated by the bowling of the Knight Riders in the first 10 overs, reaching 43-3 and having lost the key wicket of Evin Lewis. Rutherford would then shoulder the responsibility of carrying the innings as he patiently scored runs before accelerating in the last three overs, to finish on 78 runs. Brevis would remarkably score 30 runs from just six balls, constantly clearing the boundary to propel the Patriots to 163-6. 

 Trinbago Knight Riders lost the early wickets of Leonardo Julien and Colin Munro in their chase, with spinners Kevin Sinclair and Rashid Khan restricting runs. Kieron Pollard and Nicholas Pooran would then lose their wickets as the Knight Riders found themselves in serious trouble.

Seifert kept the chase alive with a valiant half-century. Despite Russell scoring 18 runs in the 19th over, it was not to be enough as Sheldon Cottrell delivered a composed final over to take the Patriots to victory..

Scores: St Kitts and Nevis Patriots 163-6 (Rutherford 78, Brevis 30*; Dupavillon 3-38, Patel 1-7) beat Trinbago Knight Riders 156-7 (Seifert 59, Pollard 31; Cottrell 3-33, Sinclair 2-18) by seven runs.

Defending champions Garvey Maceo made a statement with a 10-0 hammering of Winston Jones in the ISSA/Digicel daCosta Cup on Tuesday.

The result moves them to second in Zone N with four points from two games, three less than leaders Vere who have played one more match. Vere were held to a 1-1 draw at Foga Road.

12-time champions Cornwall College rebounded from a shock loss to Green Pond in their last game with a commanding 8-0 win over Anchovy at home to move to six points from three games and the top of Zone A on goal difference.

Also in Zone A, Irwin got their second win in as many games with a 2-0 home win over Green Pond while St. James and Maldon played out a 1-1 draw at Jarrett Park.

In Zone K, Dinthill Technical moved to a perfect 12 points from four games with a 4-1 win over Guys Hill at Tacky High. At Charlemont, the hosts got their third win in four games with a 3-1 result against Ewarton while McGrath secured a 4-2 win over Enid Bennett at home.

Glenmuir got their second win in as many games in Zone M with a 6-1 win over Tacius Golding at home. Central High beat Old Harbour 2-0 at Soya Oval in the day’s other Zone M game.

In a Zone I double header at Drax Hall, Oracabessa beat Browns Town 1-0 before Ocho Rios secured a 2-1 win over Marcus Garvey. Both teams now have six points from three matches.

In Zone D, Grange Hill and Black River played out a 0-0 draw at Llandilo Sports Complex while in Zone E, Lacovia recorded their first win in four games with a 1-0 home victory over Maggotty.

DeCarteret College and Bellefield played out a 1-1 draw in Zone F and in Zone J, Horace Clarke and St. Mary Tech played out a 0-0 draw at Richmond Farm.

There were also 16 matches played on Wednesday.

In Zone B, Frome and Rusea’s both maintained their unbeaten records. Frome secured a 7-0 win over Hopewell at home to move to six points from two games while Rusea’s went to Green Island and won 2-0 to get their third win in three games. Both teams have yet to concede a goal this season.

William Knibb hammered Muschett 8-0 at home to move to six points from two games in Zone C. Cedric Titus also have two wins in as many games after a 3-0 win over Herbert Morrison at home.

Manning’s got are now perfect after four games in Zone D after a 2-0 win over Belmont Academy at the Crawford Sports Complex. Also in Zone D, Petersfield moved to nine points from three games with a 2-1 home win over Godfrey Stewart.

In Zone E, STETHS are also perfect after four games thanks to a 1-0 win over B.B Coke at B.B Coke. Munro College now only trail STETHS by two points after a 2-1 win at Sydney Pagon.

Manchester beat Belair 2-0 at Kirkvine to move to nine points from three games in Zone F. Mt. St. Joseph recorded their first win of the season 2-0 over May Day at May Day.

In Zone G, Holmwood moved to seven points from three games with a 1-0 win over Mile Gully. Christiana beat Alphansus Davis High by one goal to nil in the Zone’s other Wednesday fixture.

Zone H saw Clarendon College beat Lennon High 3-0 at Foga Road for their second win in as many games. Zone leaders Edwin Allen now have seven points from three games after being held to a 1-1 draw by Thompson Town.

In Zone J, St. Mary High secured a 2-1 win over Wycliffe Martin High at the Highgate Community Centre while, at Tacky High, the hosts recorded a 3-1 win over Annotto Bay.

Action continues Thursday with three Zone L matches. Paul Bogle will host Yallahs, Robert Lightbourne will host Morant Bay and Seaforth will host St. Thomas Technical.
