Grenada’s Anderson Peters and Afy Fletcher were honoured as the nation’s Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year for 2024 at a glittering ceremony held on Saturday night, celebrating their outstanding achievements on the international stage.

Peters, the 2024 Olympic bronze medallist in the men's javelin throw, capped another remarkable season with the prestigious national award. The 26-year-old secured third place at the Paris Olympic Games, reaffirming his status as one of the world’s premier javelin throwers. In addition to his podium finish in Paris, Peters recorded a season-best throw of 90.61 metres in August 2024, one of the top marks globally for the year.

Fletcher, a long-serving member of the West Indies Women’s cricket team, was recognised for her consistency and excellence across the 2024 season. The experienced leg-spinner continued to be a vital contributor for the regional side, maintaining her place among the top bowlers in the Caribbean and delivering critical performances throughout the year.

The awards were based on athletes' excellence at the highest levels of international competition, a key criterion emphasized by the selection panel. Peters’ Olympic medal and Fletcher’s sustained impact on the international cricket stage were seen as clear reflections of that standard.

Saturday’s ceremony also celebrated rising stars and pioneers in Grenadian sport. Cricketer Kirt Murray was named Junior Sportsman of the Year, while track and field standout Annalisa Brown earned the Junior Sportswoman of the Year title, highlighting the next generation of Grenadian talent.

Paralympic achievements were also recognised, with Tyler Smith honoured as Outstanding Male Paralympian and Ishona Charles named Outstanding Female Paralympian, acknowledging their courage and performances on the international para-sport stage.

Decathlete Lindon Victor received the Outstanding Sports Performance award for his stellar season, adding further prestige to the night’s celebrations.

Special Awards for Recognition of Service were presented to Royston La Hee and Charles George for their enduring contributions to Grenadian sports over the decades.

Saturday’s ceremony underscored Grenada’s growing influence in global athletics and cricket, with both Peters and Fletcher serving as inspirations for the next generation of athletes who aspire to make their mark on the world stage.
