Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls complete whitewash against England Roses

By October 15, 2018

Jamaica’s Sunshine girls completed a route of England’s Rose’s in their three Test series with a 58-43 victory at the National Indoor Sports Complex in Jamaica on Monday night.

The Jamaicans, as they had done in the first game when they won 55-43 and in the second when they were 58-39 winners, started quickly.

The Sunshine Girls led 16-10 in the first quarter, but extended their lead in the second to lead 30-21 at the half. Again, that lead would be extended, as the Sunshine Girls led the Roses 46-34 at the end of the third quarter.

Things got worse for the Roses in the final quarter, with the Jamaicans running out 58-43 winners.

On the way to that total, Jhaniele Fowler-Reid led all scorers, sinking 42 goals from 46 attempts from goal shoot, while goal attack, Shanice Beckford had 12 from 17 and Shaniel Slater enjoyed a cameo with four from six.

In the losing effort, the Rose’s Georgina Fisher was the best, grabbing 24 goals from her 28 attempts, while Eleanor Chadwell, who had started in the goal shoot position, had 11 from 15.

At goal attack, Kadeen Corbin sunk eight goals from 13 attempts.

James Anderson will be rested for the third and final Test in Sri Lanka, with Stuart Broad taking his place in the England side.

The tourists have already wrapped up the series ahead of the concluding match in Colombo, having won the first two Tests in Galle and Pallekele.

Broad was dropped for those encounters but returns at the ground where he made his Test debut in 2007.

"I understand the reasoning behind it with the series already won," said Anderson.

"With the winter we've got ahead, it makes sense for Stuart to get some cricket. He's not played for a while and it's going to be a tough tour of the West Indies.

"It's a good opportunity for him and the team. You have to look at the situation as well – it's hard work for seamers here and it's not like I've been able to have a huge input on the games."

The third Test begins on Friday.
